I've been trying to play Metro Last Light and it's driving me crazy! My system specs are on the side there. Sometimes it will run ok until things get busy, then, poof, the slideshow kicks in! I've deleted local content and re-installed it 3 times, all settings are as low as I can go, Vsync is off, screen res is 1280x724, and just in case, all my case fans are on full speed. Also I have cpuz hwm running, (no effect on game running or not), all temps are fine. Other games I play are Skyrim, Metro 2033, Borderlands 1,2, Medal of Honor, Rage, Painkiller Hell and Damnation, UT3, and a couple others, all on ultra settings and full res 1920x1200. I've heard that the graphics in this game can be a little demanding, but this is crazy!

Turn off PHysX, SSAA Off Those will be the big two that will slow you down. What you are discribing sounds like the PhysX portions of the game.

Well, here's the settings, as I mentioned, low as I can go; Res 1280x720 - Quality low - SSAA off - Texture Filtering AF4X (only other setting for this is AF16X) - Motion Blur low - Tesselation off - VSYNC off - Advanced Physics off (just found this under Game options, no change when turned off).

You should be able to edit the .ini file for the game located /SteamApps/common/Metro Last Light/ and see if being able to adjust things further down, may help with performance some more.

OK! Found the folder for physx and uninstalled it. The game runs just fine now, full res and some other adjustments have made the game quite nice now. Just so I understand things better, Mantle, PHysX, and DX11-12, what are the differences and similarities?

Awesome! Glad to hear that helped you out.

All of those are API's (application programming interface specifies). They control how software talks to other software and software talking to some hardware. What has been the case is the default is DX. DX has become bloated over the years trying to cover all hardware under one umbrella. Since there is so many different types of hardware DX interacts with hardware on a basic level to ensure compatibility. The drivers handle the rest.

Mantle is designed to skip DX all together. It communicates directly to the hardware to a very in-depth level giving developers absolute control over the end product and its performance. They refer to it as to the "metal". Which means Mantle can interact to the individual GPU core level, VRMs, vBIOS and memory. Mantle can be a game changer because of AMDs reach in the gaming Industry. All current consoles have AMD GPUs. 2 out of 3 have AMD CPUs. AMD ships a lot of discreate GPUs in the desktop market. AMD APUs are in mainstream Laptops and desktops. AMD APUs will be in tablets soon. Mantle works on ALL GCN based GPUs. So all 7xxx series based GPUs and APUs support Mantle including the gaming consoles. Porting games between PC and across consoles will be very easy. This also includes Android devices, Windows 8 based tablets.

See why Mantle is a big thing? AMD positioned themselves to be deep into the future of gaming on all devices!

PhysX is not like DX or Mantle APIs. PhysX is strictly for the Interactions of Things. Cloth in the wide, bullet to a wall, you falling to the ground. Physics!! It is written for Nvidia hardware. It can run on AMD hardware but Nvidia made it so it will be crippled. You just witnessed this. It adds extra work to AMD CPU and GPUs. So on mid to low end hardware it must be disabled.

DX12 is not out yet but is supposed to be Mantle with a Microsoft logo. Early reports looks like MS ripped AMD off.

Mantle is actually not out either. It is still in Beta testing.

I remember when AMD bought ATI, I knew something good was coming, although it took a little longer than expected. Now, if only there's a way to pull those "blinders" off of the intel/nvidia "Zealots", more people would begin to realize how good a value AMD actually is. Alas, this is not a perfect world.
