Intel Working on Discrete GPUs Sounds Good, but Might be Bad

At the end of last year, news came out that Raja Koduri was leaving AMD and moving over to Intel. I guess I can’t gauge what the general response was from the enthusiast community, but I personally felt like that was a bit of a slap in the face for those hoping for a Radeon turn around. Vega sounded interesting, but the end results were no where near what expectations were building it up to be. Now, it looks like a leak is showing that Intel is developing two discrete GPU solutions and while more competition is typically a good thing, the move could be a net negative to the industry instead. The most obvious ramification of this news is that we could end up with a more competitive environment to combat Nvidia. While the Green Giant has certainly fared well in the graphics division, they also have a price tag to match. I’m not saying they don’t deserve it, but it’s always nice when tough competition gives builders more value for their money. On the other hand, there’s a couple of things here that really bother me. First, this adds a third driver to the arena that developers will have to take seriously. Sure, Intel iGPUs pose a similar issue, but the low level performance of the hardware indicates it might not be as huge of a concern to AAA. This may be a concern that’s completely non-legitimate, but the concern of Intel hiring Raja may be of more concern. Nvidia’s CES 2018 isn’t Super Exciting, but still Relevant

For the most part, the only real news we want to hear from Nvidia is what’s coming down the pipes for graphics card releases. This makes sense because we’re a hardware site, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t other important announcements to keep an eye out for. Many of us get into PC hardware because of gaming and Nvidia just made two very important steps in the gaming arena. For starters, we have the announcement of the BFGDs, or Big Format Game Displays. Sure, a 65″ display would be fun to play on, but most of us live in the real world and even if we could afford such a monstrosity, would still have no where we could put it. No, what’s really important is the specs behind these displays. We’re talking full 4k support AND 120 Hz refresh rate. While it will take hefty hardware to support this, the ability for more than 60 Hz on a 4k display is a great step in the right direction. In light of this, Nvidia also announced the free beta for the Geforce Now app. Does your computer suck? Geforce now let’s you play games remotely using Nvidia’s top notch hardware, while streaming it back to your display at a much higher quality than what the computer could normally handle. These announcements could really change PC gaming for the masses. It’s Dogs and Cats Living Together! Intel has Radeon Vega Graphics

I’ve checked my calendar as many times as I possibly can and I’m pretty sure we have 3 months to go before April hits. The other possible explanation is that we are the alternate reality, because I can’t figure out the real reason between AMD and Intel working together on anything. In fact, the real reality must be the one where they are still bitter rivals and we exist outside of that. On the flip side, Intel is using Vega graphics in their latest release and this is really great news. Intel’s new 8th gen processors, geared towards mobility, are adding the Vega graphics core with HBM2 memory. The huge benefit from this is saving space and power consumption, all while increasing computing and gaming performance. However, there’s another big reason why this is such big news. Nvidia may dominate the GPU market, but something that’s easy to forget is how many gamers use integrated graphics to play titles on a laptop. This could begin changing how AMD performs in gaming since developers may begin taking the Red side of things a lot more seriously. Forums have stated that AMD could perform much better based on their hardware level, but poor optimization hurts that. If Vega starts taking large market shares as an integrated graphic product, we may see a lot more attention given to AMD when games are developed. Volta May Dominate the GPU World: Nvidia Unveils the Titan V

I’m guessing HBM2 is the real deal since we’re finally getting the opportunity to see it in an Nvidia card. Also, I’m seriously doubting Nvidia will lose the highest performing GPU crown for quite some years to come. One thing’s for certain, this company has done an impressive job with each new architecture release and the new Titan V is just the latest to raise what already was a very high bar. It’s easy to dismiss marketing jargon in this day and age of hardware releases, yet the 9x performance increase in deep learning is still a pretty solid accomplishment. Deep learning won’t help the average user directly, but looking at the normal performance numbers indicates around a 25% performance leap from the Titan XP. Considering the increase in transistors and performance, it’s very impressive that the TDP is still at 250W. Just when we thought Maxwell and Pascal were enough to curb our enthusiast appetites, Volta shows that too much performance is never a problem in the computer world. The Titan V reminds me of what hardware releases used to be about. We may not get a release every 6 months, but we do get a sizeable performance increase and it turns out for most of us, getting two years to let the budget recover is much better for purchasing an upgrade. AMD Threadripper: More like Thread-Demolisher

The year of Ryzen has turned out to be a very good year indeed. AMD’s new architecture only had some minor set backs to overcome, but now it’s poised to be the competitive champion of the PC market. I’m going to let you google the Threadripper reviews this time, because I’m going to focus on some incredible firsts that basically sum up how great this release is and why Threadripper is demolishing competition. For starters…. Holy Cats! Intel has dominated this chart for ages now, yet there’s a Threadripper at the very top!!! AMD is at the top of the charts!!!!! Wow! NZXT Kraken G12 Video Card Cooling Bracket Review

Introduction Liquid cooling is all the rage with these kids today, but back in my day…. Ah who am I kidding? I’ve mostly experienced the ease and simplicity of CLC units myself. While I firmly believe that aluminum rads and integrated pumps have their clear performance limits, CLCs offer a simple, yet fairly safe alternative to air cooling while giving consumers a huge variety in aesthetic design. The only problem is that these units have primarily catered to cooling the CPU. NZXT is trying to change that with their Kraken G12 cooling bracket. Even though it isn’t a full closed loop cooler, it’s supposed to easily adapt the Kraken (an other) coolers to be used on a graphics card instead of your CPU. The concept is great and I suspect we’re getting closer to an age where extra cooling isn’t going to net near as much of a benefit on a 95W CPU as it is on a massive 300W GPU. MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X Video Card Review

Introduction Wow! It feels like the hardware landscape is full of yin and yang. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a light or dark side, but there seems to be several instances of competitive battles being fought by only two sides. I’ll let you decide if Nvidia is yin or yang in this case, but we’re bringing that big green logo into the spotlight for a review of their GTX 1060. Once again, this is a card targeting mid-range budgets, but the effort to bring high quality gameplay to the masses feels a bit stronger in recent years than it has in the past. We’ll have to see how Nvidia stacks up here soon. Nvidia may be targeting the mid range budget, but you wouldn’t know based on what MSI is doing with their design of the GTX 1060. The Gaming X looks like it takes the card to almost top-tier levels of design and quality before we even get to turn a PC on. I suppose that it could all be flare and the actual build quality could be less than it appears, but I seriously doubt that will be the case. I’ve owned a couple of MSI cards in the past that I really enjoyed so it will be great to see if MSI lives up to their reputation of the past and the internet. Is Nvidia Faking HDR? I don’t think it’s that Simple

News stories are popping up about Nvidia deliberately worsening an SDR monitor that was being compared to an HDR one to make the new technology stand out better. Has Nvidia really stooped to faking a showcase just to push new technology on consumers? If that’s the case, then maybe HDR isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be and we can pull out our torches, our pitchforks and begin hunting down team green for trying to mislead us. On the other hand, I really think there’s way more going on than what meets the eye and even though wild speculation will ensue, I have solid experience leading me to believe that Nvidia was genuinely trying to give a realistic representation, even if their methods were questionable. Let’s start out with how this Computex display from Nvidia was found out in the first place. Hardware Canucks was granted access to the monitor settings and upon restoring factory settings on the SDR monitor, it looked much better than before, even looking better than the HDR display. One thing that makes total sense is that a reviewer would look at the SDR monitor and pick up on something being wrong right away. After restoring better settings, the SDR panel looked significantly better than HDR and it could easily be concluded that the new technology is being over-hyped. Should you use all AMD for your Next Build?

The debate of AMD vs Intel vs Nvidia is an age old one that will probably never cease. As long as there’s innovation in the PC market, there’s bound to be a new top dog in the fight. Intel still has the IPC lead in processing and Nvidia is killing it in performance and energy efficiency with their GPUs. So why, when given a sizeable budget and asked by my friend to build a PC, would I go all out with an AMD base? 16 Phase VRM!?!?!?! Galax Unveils Geforce GTX 1080 Ti HoF Edition

I don’t publish on many individual GPUs much these days. It’s not because I don’t want to, it’s just there’s a ton of them and my time is pretty limited. That doesn’t mean I won’t speak up about something that blows my mind a bit. Galax just unveiled the Hall of Fame Edition of their GTX 1080 Ti design and the beast has a 16 phase VRM! That doesn’t include the additional 3 for the memory. It takes a lot of power to keep up with 19 phases, so it should come as no surprise that the card has three 8-pin power connectors. While the bracket only looks to take two slots, the fans stick out far enough to make it a 3 slot card. On the other hand, can you imagine what kind of overclock you could get if you put the GPU under a water block? As long as you don’t hit the silicon ceiling first, I imagine liquid cooling would give you a lot of headroom. Nvidia Does it Again! GTX 1080 Ti for Ultimate Gaming Performance

People at this site might think I’m a fanboy of a certain company if they follow me long enough. While I understand that entirely, you have to realize I have a huge sense of awe in what Nvidia has done over the years. They have graphics cards that cost a bit more, but they also have performance and quality that merits it. Even the 4 GB GTX 970 controversy seemed more like one of those occasional oversights to me than a company trying to pull one over on consumers. The GTX 1080 Ti is the pinnacle of Pascal technology and if I had $700 free and clear, you know I’d own one! By now, we understand the basic concepts of Pascal. We have excellent power efficiency, great gaming power, and the same type of overclocking potential Maxwell had. A couple of standout features the 1080 Ti has is a total of 11 GB GDDR5X memory, 3584 CUDA cores and a 7 phase VRM design that I’m sure some OEMs will improve upon. It’s a beast of a card and what’s becoming a usual trend for Nvidia now, is the fact that it offers some really good value compared to its Titan predecessor. CES 2017: RBT, Samsung, Nvidia, Intel

This is it, the last bit of our coverage of CES 2017. We’ll have one more piece that will go through our top picks, but this is the last of the show floors we were able to get to. We had a mouse that’s trying to put an end to carpal tunnel, some great storage and monitor solutions from Samsung, the HDR display I’ve been dreaming of and some better explanations of what is going on with the architecture in Kaby Lake. CES 2017 was a great show and it sets us up for a great looking year for PC hardware. October News Round Up: SWIFTECH Apogee XL2, GAMER STORM Genome II, GTX 1050 Ti and More!

Welcome back to our second roundup of hardware news that happened this month. The CPU and GPU side of things may have slowed down a tad, but there’s a lot that happened with cooling and cases. Let’s dive in and get excited about what’s coming down the road! CPUs Let’s start out with an update on Kaby Lake. Geekbench came out with some impressive results and the story made it look like INTEL has merely been holding back for a while. Recently however, an i5-7500K sample was benchmarked and only showed about a 10% improvement over Skylake. This is actually pretty disappointing, especially considering that the 4970K is still a top tier single thread performer. On the plus side, it looks like all 100 series motherboards will be able to support Kaby Lake with a BIOS update, but I doubt many will see the need to upgrade from Skylake in such a short time table. At the time being, ASUS is the only brand this is confirmed for, but that’s a good indication that other manufactures will follow suit. September News Round Up: Zen, Kaby Lake, GTX 1050 and More

How does a freelance writer keep up with everything happening in the industry when he has a full time job, a family, reviews to keep up with and a puppy in training? It’s worth pointing out that a lot has happened in the month of September this year. AMD has been making announcements about Zen, INTEL has had some details about Kaby Lake and NVIDIA is talking about the GTX 1050. Rather than try to keep up with every piece of news as it releases, we’re going to try something new by having a once a month update to catch you up on the things that are happening in the industry. Welcome to the PureOC Monthly News! On the last Friday of each month, we’ll pull together all the news that feels relevant and give a one stop location to get your info from. So without further ado, let’s get into what’s happened this month. CPUs, Motherboards and Chipsets  AMD Zen, Grey Hawk, X370 Chipset and A12-9800 We’ll start with AMD this time around since much of the anticipation of what will happen in the CPU sector relies on them.
