Samsung 850 EVO mSATA & M.2 SSD Review

Many moons ago there was an article based on solid state memory and how it would change everything we do, if they could get it to work correctly. Many were amazed at the thought of drives having no moving parts, a major reduction in size and energy consumption. There were many factors that prevented these early SSDs from being a viable replacement to platter drives, MTBF, speed, capacity and of course cost being the most prominent.

ECS LIVA X Mini PC- Review

Introduction   Here we are at the beginning of a new year where we can start fresh on old habits, forgotten projects of days past, and new promises to self and others; it is all about moving forward. Last year ECS released a mini PC kit called LIVA. We were invited out to a press event in San Jose to discuss it and a few other products.  Article here.  The small black box PC was meant to be assembled before the end user installed their preferred OS. This wasn’t overly difficult for even a beginner but it may have intimidated some into looking for other solutions. LIVA had a decent amount of processing power, small footprint, built in Bluetooth/WiFi and was priced competitively. Overall it was a good first out for ECS. Now we have a new year and a fresh attempt to introduce Mini PCs to those with an imagination, limited space, HTPC or even digital signage. The LIVA X is an update to add features and correct some of the pitfalls found in the first iteration of the LIVA MINI PC. I have high hopes for the LIVA X so let’s see if it can replace my current full size HTPC solution.     ECS, the Elitegroup Computer Systems, was established in 1987, and almost 30 years of business. More than two decades, ECS has overcome a great deal of obstacles facing new businesses and has experienced the joy of significant growth and development. Her main focus has expanded to not only motherboards, but also desktop and notebook computers, graphics cards and other mo...

Introduction In the world of custom PC Building, consumers and builders frequently ask what the best motherboards are for Gaming PC Builds. While these are always valid questions, some folks are looking to build a high end rendering or workstation PC. The Z87 series chipset has plenty of options from the budget friendly models to enthusiast gaming motherboards; however, workstation motherboards are not as readily available. That changes today. We are going to be looking at a motherboard from ASUS, one of the few manufacturers who created a Z87 chipset based WS (workstation) motherboard to meet this niche market. We have the ASUS Z87 WS on our test bench, and we are going to put this baby to through the ringer. As an interesting aside, one of the few features of this motherboard which immediately caught our attention is the available support of Quad SLI and Crossfire with 4 PCIe slots available. Not many Z87 motherboards offer this out of the box. There are also tons of other features that we typically don’t see with your “typical” Z87 chipset motherboard. Does this bode well for this unique new board? Read on to find out! Let’s get the review started by talking about the 8 Series chipset, but first here’s a quick word about Asus:   Origin of the Name “Asus” ASUS comes from the last four letters of Pegasus, the winged horse in Greek mythology that represents the inspiration of art and learning. ASUS embodies the strength, cre...

The introduction of Intel's new "Haswell" line of processors also brought its new 8 series chipset. The introduction of Haswell and its socket and chipset change came as no surprise. We have seen this from Intel with its "Tick Tock" development strategy, including their change to its power delivery management. It makes sense and was crucial for Intel to make these changes. Today, we have a chance to look at one of MSI's flagship motherboards for the new Z87 architecture: the MSI Z87 MPower. MSI's previous products in the Z87 chipset MPower line were typically top performers, and include excellent overclocking and features.
