Gigabyte Kills it at Computex 2017

I’ve become a huge fan of Gigabyte in recent months. Not only did their Z270 platform stand out in performance, but the Aorus branding and lighting design is fantastic and I had a great experience using them for my Ryzen reviews. (More testing in the works as you read this) At the very least, it comes as no surprise that Gigabyte has come away with some awards and records since Computex. Not only did they come away with a Best Choice Award, but the Aorus X299 set a few world records in overclocking performance. The Aorus Z270X-Gaming 9 ended up winning the Computex 2017 Best Choice Gold Award and while I can’t say whether the award is hard to earn or not, I can say the Gaming 9 is certainly deserving of recognition if the Gaming 7 has anything to say about it. What really caught my eye was the fact that their new Aorus X299 board reached a 7.5 GHz overclock on the upcoming i7-7740K chip. The team was able to set 4 related records in the process. Check out the press releases below for the full details and don’t forget to keep Gigabyte in mind the next time you’re looking for a solid motherboard for your system. Computex Award AORUS Z270X-Gaming 9’s Functionality and Innovation Stands Out Among Competitors City of Industry, California, May 24, 2017 – GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY Co. Gigabyte BRIX Gaming VR Wins d&i Award Ahead of Computex

I know pre-built systems aren’t our thing usually, but I had to post this PR because Gigabyte has an impressive little device on their hands. Honestly, if I had the spare cash, this would be my LAN party machine for game days (that I hardly ever have anymore) or my editing station for travel. Shoot, it would even sub as a great paper-weight that does so much more than holding paper. The internal heatsink in this device was fantastic, allowing high performance hardware to run cooler than most, if not all, mini-PCs can handle. Check out the info on the award below and while we won’t be able to get to Computex this year, we will be keeping an eye on the news! GIGABYTE Mini PC Recognized for Outstanding Form & Function City of Industry, California, May 2nd, 2017 – GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY Co. Ltd., a leading manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards, is excited to announce that the BRIX Gaming VR has won a d&i award ahead of Computex 2017. This soon to be released Mini PC exemplifies the spirit of the d&i awards with its combination of gaming prowess and aesthetically pleasing design. Thanks to its small size of only 2.6L and powerful hardware, the BRIX Gaming VR miniature PC is perfect for use in VR setups, especially for standing and “room-scale” VR. This Mini PC packs a powerful NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX™ 1060 into a sleek, black, brushed aluminum chassis with orange highlights. Its subdued but sporty look can fit into any room, whether a room ...

GIGABYTE Validates Quadro Support on Designer Boards

What happens when Gigabyte supports Quadro graphics design cards? They get a silver PCB of course! Outside of the Quadro support, it’s hard to say how this board differs so much from some of the Aorus Z270 gaming flavors. On the other hand, does it matter when you have a board that looks as amazing as this!?! Check out the full press release below for some more details and links to the website. GIGABYTE Creates a Solution Geared Towards Content Creators City of Industry, California, March 24th, 2017 – GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY Co. GIGABYTE and Corsair Partner for RGB Fusion

Well, Gigabyte is the first, but are they really the “only?” Even if they are, I’m sure that will change shortly, but Aorus motherboards certainly deserve the honor of being the first to support Corsair’s RGB RAM modules. Ryzen AM4 Motherboards Resurface: Aorus, Titanium and Crosshair VI in the Mix

For anyone looking for mini-ITX love today, I’m sorry I don’t have that for you. For those wanting to see AMD have high-end ATX motherboards again, I’ve got ya’ covered. AMD had a “Meet The Experts” webinar recently which revealed more details on the new AM4 boards coming with Ryzen. It’s been so long since we’ve seen fully up-to-date boards for team Red that I had to show off some of the great additions coming from Gigabyte, MSI and Asus. Let’s start off with Gigabyte’s big showing since this board already looks very impressive. If you’ve followed Gigabyte recently, you know they started a new branding of high end motherboards by putting them under the Aorus badge. It looks like the board from the slide is named the AX370 Gaming 5, which is interesting because that leaves room for even beefier boards down the road. I also say interesting because the Gaming 5 looks very impressive in its own right. A quick count indicates a 10 phase VRM, support for the new RGB fusion feature and other Aorus features like Smart Fan. Having been on AM3+ since Vishera, you can imagine I’m quivering with excitement at how excellent this board is looking in comparison. MSI is bringing their big guns to the designing table by introducing AM4 to their Titanium series lineup. Titanium is the overclocker’s dream in a lot of ways, but I still can’t get over how great that silver PCB looks on the design. It still see...

October News Round Up: SWIFTECH Apogee XL2, GAMER STORM Genome II, GTX 1050 Ti and More!

Welcome back to our second roundup of hardware news that happened this month. The CPU and GPU side of things may have slowed down a tad, but there’s a lot that happened with cooling and cases. Let’s dive in and get excited about what’s coming down the road! CPUs Let’s start out with an update on Kaby Lake. Geekbench came out with some impressive results and the story made it look like INTEL has merely been holding back for a while. Recently however, an i5-7500K sample was benchmarked and only showed about a 10% improvement over Skylake. This is actually pretty disappointing, especially considering that the 4970K is still a top tier single thread performer. On the plus side, it looks like all 100 series motherboards will be able to support Kaby Lake with a BIOS update, but I doubt many will see the need to upgrade from Skylake in such a short time table. At the time being, ASUS is the only brand this is confirmed for, but that’s a good indication that other manufactures will follow suit. We’re still a ways out from release so we can almost expect performance to fluctuate a bit more until closer to release. http://wccftech.com/intel-core-i5-7600k-kaby-lake-cpu-benchmarks/ http://wccftech.com/kaby-lake-support-asus-100-series-motherboards-confirmed/ GPUs The big news this month was the release of the GTX 1050 Ti and the 1050. Each GPU offers a great budget option for 1080p gaming while being extremely energy efficient. Rather than reinvent ...

GIGABYTE has Great New Motherboards and Laptops at CES 2016

GIGABYTE had an extremely impressive show floor this year at CES. It seemed like they showed off everything they had and quite frankly, I was blown away at how top-of-the-line all of their products seemed. One of the most intriguing releases coming up that I got to see personally were some new AMD boards coming with the AM3+ socket, but there were also some amazing overclocking boards on the INTEL side as well. No matter what I looked at, I was thoroughly impressed so let’s start diving into more details about what GIGABYTE showed us at CES 2016. Let’s begin with two AM3+ boards that GIGABYTE is releasing. The GA-990FX-Gaming looks like the high-end AMD motherboard users have been waiting for for some time now. It actually has a full 8 phase power system to handle high end CPUs like the 9590. It has NVMe support as well as an M.2 socket. The heatsinks look nice and the heatpipe running across them will help dissipate the heat further. The PCIe slots are reinforced like their other gaming boards, and it also includes the Killer LAN with the AMP-UP audio. This board has everything a 9590 user will most likely want, with little that isn’t useful. The AM3+ is going by the wayside, but we probably have almost a whole year before we see Zen. Most AMD users are budget conscious anyways, so with an MSRP of $149.99, this board is at a perfect spot for users who still want quality and features. I feel like this board is going to own the AM3+ market from here on out...

GIGABYTE has a New 990FX Motherboard!?! GA-990FX-Gaming

UPDATE: As requested, here’s an update about the availability of the GA-990FX-Gaming since it just showed up for sale. Links below. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128886 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019C3S2CS/ref=s9_simh_gw_g147_i1_r?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0K6H28YZ47R31PRV6DY5&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop I spend far too much time scouring the internet for anything hardware related. As it is, I see a lot of comments from people asking why nobody is coming out with better FX series motherboards, especially with the 9590 having been out for quite some time now. To be fair to manufacturers, nobody wants to invest too much in a chipset that is on the verge of being obsolete. This makes what GIGABYTE is doing all the more confusing but I think I can shed some light on what’s really going on. Between certain supply issues and what amounts to a surprisingly high demand, GIGABYTE may be positioning themselves as a sole contender with the release of the GA-990FX-Gaming. First, let’s talk about what could be bringing this on. Both ASUS and GIGABYTE are experiencing about a 10% drop in their motherboard sales. Most of the time when this happens, everyone is quick to point out that desktops are going to fail and be replaced by the all-powerful tablet (seriously?). But there are other factors attributing to a possible rise with AMD, namely, Skylake. INTEL really missed the...

DirectX 12 is a Great Thing for AMD

And everyone for that matter! But let’s not harsh on my sacrifice of proper grammar for stylistic writing when we can focus on good things from DirectX 12. I’m a firm believer that by the end of next year, DirectX 12 and Vulcan are going to be taking the gaming world by storm. I got a chance to play around with Fable Legends and the graphics were down right amazing! Techspot recently did a comparison of DirectX 11 and 12 to show the FPS gain from a couple of different configurations in Ashes of the Singularity. While the improvements were nice overall, there were some particular gains with FX CPUs that I’ve been waiting to see for quite some time now. Let’s start with the bad news. DirectX 12 is not Bulldozer’s salvation. If anything DirectX 12 is the final nail in that coffin, in the sense that new architecture is long overdue. Shifting away from single-thread performance was never a good move. I still believe AMD was on the right track in that we needed to move to more utilization of multi-threading, especially in gaming, but that shouldn’t have been at the sacrifice of single-thread. Zen is looking to solve these issues, but these initial results are showing an 8350 struggling to keep up with an i3. Even though the i3 is later gen, we’re still talking about a low budget range CPU beating out an enthusiast one for gaming. Now that we got that out of the way though, let’s get on to the good news for AMD. We still have only o...
