A Walk Down Memory Lane: Baeca, Bulldozer and Zen

Remember when off the wall rumors at the end of 2013 told us that AMD had a monster chip coming? Pepperidge Farms remembers! At the time, the rumor was so far fetched that nobody gave it a second thought. If you’re still a bit hazy on the details, check out the following link so you can get a refresher on it. The rumor seemed absolutely ridiculous, yet today we’re staring into the face of a CPU that has 8 cores, 16 threads and runs off of a meager 95W of power. Here’s why I think this rumor is interesting. Jim Keller rejoined AMD in 2012 to begin helping them redesign their architecture from the ground up and it was only a year later that this rumor surfaced. It’s extremely possible that Baeca was an early engineering attempt that, while being a failure in and of itself, was a crucial step towards bringing Ryzen to the market. Why I think AMD is Turning it Around, and it’s not the Reason You’d Expect

Let’s face it. If you’re a full time news and editorial writer, then you want to cover every bit of info you can find without missing a beat. On the other hand, if you’re like me, then you have to balance your passion for computer hardware with a full time job, a wife, kids, and the other normal things that come your way. AMD has been pumping out some interesting news, but there hasn’t been enough concrete things that I could find the time to put enough thoughts together on. However, there are enough small things going on that I think it’s time to go over them. AMD seems to be heading in the right direction with their upcoming CPUs and GPUs, but there’s one thing that really caught my attention that encouraged me about Red’s potential to turn their fortunes around next year. Zen is the major thing everyone is hoping will bring AMD back from the brink. The new architecture combined with the new cache design seems to be showing a lot of promise. Nobody will argue with a 40% IPC gain and if the chips overclock decently, Zen could be a major win. Recently, news came out showing that the new design met AMD’s expectations and no serious bottleneck occurred in testing. This makes you wonder how much AMD knew about Bulldozer’s bottlenecks and how hard they tried to overlook them. AMD is Coming Back, Hopefully in a Big Way

About a month ago, I wrote a piece titled, “The Story of Steamroller, CPU Benchmark, and FX.” Amidst the disappointment that Steamroller wasn’t coming to the FX line up, I postulated that the performance wasn’t adding up to a quality product and that AMD was going to completely overhaul their high end to be relevant again. Now, in a couple of releases from AMD, it sounds like that is exactly what is happening and AMD fans have something to look forward to again in the high end CPU market. The first bit of news that is showing this overhaul process is AMD’s decision to go back to SMT architecture from their current CMT architecture. Without going into too much detail, CMT was AMD’s own Multi-threading architecture designed to rival the more traditional SMT architecture that IBM introduced back in the 1970s. Unfortunately, as proven by Bulldozer, Piledriver and even Steamroller, this design isn’t living up to potential. Even though AMD has come out with some decent Multi-Thread performance, their single core has significantly lagged behind and even their decent performance hasn’t been enough to to stay in step with Intel’s high end. While AMD did manage to boast the first factory clocked 5 GHz CPU, the power and performance didn’t merit even the reduced cost of owning one after the price drops. Combo Review: AMD “Vishera” FX-8350 & ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z ROG

We have a combo review for you today. We are bringing you a full review of AMD's new FX-8350 series CPU, a.k.a. the "Vishera." In order to do that, we wanted just the right motherboard, and Asus happens to have the new Crosshair V Formula-Z ROG ready to step in. This gives us a chance to test the mettle of two top of the line products at once. Will it be a match made in heaven? We shall soon see. AMD first released its FX series chips last year with the FX "Bulldozer" series. Some of us were not too happy with the chip, because the performance did not live up to expectations. Despite (and because of) that hiccup, we are very excited to see what their "new tech" can bring to the table. Today we are going to look at the new FX-8350 series chip, code-named "Vishera," to see what it can do. AMD has reported that the new line of FX series chips will bring a 15% increase in performance from the previous series. We look forward to putting this claim to the test. The new line of FX-8350 series chip is made to compete with its rival, the Intel Core i5 3570k. Our intention is to show you how it stacks up against just that, and who is still wearing the performance crown at the end.
