October News Round Up: SWIFTECH Apogee XL2, GAMER STORM Genome II, GTX 1050 Ti and More!

Welcome back to our second roundup of hardware news that happened this month. The CPU and GPU side of things may have slowed down a tad, but there’s a lot that happened with cooling and cases. Let’s dive in and get excited about what’s coming down the road! CPUs Let’s start out with an update on Kaby Lake. Geekbench came out with some impressive results and the story made it look like INTEL has merely been holding back for a while. Recently however, an i5-7500K sample was benchmarked and only showed about a 10% improvement over Skylake. This is actually pretty disappointing, especially considering that the 4970K is still a top tier single thread performer. On the plus side, it looks like all 100 series motherboards will be able to support Kaby Lake with a BIOS update, but I doubt many will see the need to upgrade from Skylake in such a short time table. At the time being, ASUS is the only brand this is confirmed for, but that’s a good indication that other manufactures will follow suit. We’re still a ways out from release so we can almost expect performance to fluctuate a bit more until closer to release. http://wccftech.com/intel-core-i5-7600k-kaby-lake-cpu-benchmarks/ http://wccftech.com/kaby-lake-support-asus-100-series-motherboards-confirmed/ GPUs The big news this month was the release of the GTX 1050 Ti and the 1050. Each GPU offers a great budget option for 1080p gaming while being extremely energy efficient. Rather than reinvent ...

BE QUIET! Silent Base 800 Review

Introduction People often think the PSU is the most overlooked computer piece in a build, but the case is far easier to overlook than you might think. Sure, you need to have plenty of wattage to future proof upgrades, but nothing can cramp that custom loop dream quicker than a case that didn’t have quite enough room to fit the radiator above your motherboard. BE QUIET! decided it was time to try and break into the computer chassis market while staying true to their values of silent computing. While the Silent Base 800 already appears to have the proper design to help reduce noise, the real question is whether this case will be able to offer room for high end computer parts combined with advanced cooling. We’ll dive right in here in a sec, but before we do that, let’s take a closer look at the company behind the Silent Base 800.   About BE QUIET!: BE QUIET! be quiet! Straight Power 10 700W Review

Looking to make further inroads into North America with the Straight Power 10 700W, European company be quiet! is targeting a fairly lucrative mid-range segment for the power supply market. The be quiet! Straight Power 10 700W features simple styling, a mostly-modular setup, an 80Plus Gold certification. Let's take a closer look at this power supply from be quiet! and see if it can deliver the goods to a demanding consumer base.

be quiet! Straight Power 10 is even quieter than its predecessor

be quiet! Straight Power 10 is even quieter than its predecessor With a SilentWings 3 fan, better voltage stability and even more watts at the same price Glinde, September 16th, 2014 – be quiet! the market leader for PC power supplies in Germany for eight successive years*, today announced its brand new Straight Power 10 series. These new power supplies feature an extremely quiet and brand new 135 mm SilentWings 3 fan. Voltage stability has been improved by extending the PSU’s topology with DC-to-DC. The overall wattage has been increased and a high-quality PFC capacitor has been installed to prevent high-frequency noise. The previous generation Straight Power E9 was the best seller for be quiet!. Now, be quiet! is introducing the next step in the Straight Power series. The German based company and design team was focused on improving the earlier product in every critical performance parameter. Noise Levels The new power supply units are equipped with a revised cooling system, including a 135 mm SilentWings 3-fan with a high-quality Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB). This fan has been developed by be quiet! exclusively for use in power supplies. The new six-pole motor and the FDB not only provide an exceptionally long lifespan, but silent operation as well. The funnel-shaped, larger air inlet of the SilentWings 3 increases airflow, while reducing unwanted turbulence. Thanks to the larger diameter the same amount of air can be transported at lower fan speeds and at lowe...

Be Quiet! Gives their case a name.

It finally has a name…. At this past Computex in Taipei, Be Quiet! surprised many of us by showing off a custom design case. Nice clean lines, angled top cover, smooth front surface, matte black paint job with a bright contrasting orange trim and out cropped feet, did wonders for creating a bit of buzz. The case with no name would be their introduction into the already crowded and competitive chassis market. This is a divergence from Be Quiet!’s bread and butter, performance fans and power supplies with whisper quiet operation. We should have been expecting Be Quiet to join in the fray as noise reduction among enthusiast reaches epic importance, what better way to start a silent system other then the body that will hold everything else. There has been some speculation on the naming of this mystery chassis based on Be Quiet!’s previous products such as the Shadow Rock, Dark Rock, Dark Power, Silent Wing and Shadow Wing, true to form, Be Quiet! drops the name right in the middle of their naming convention, “Silent Base 800”. Why Silent Base 800? I would guess that it is silent, past that I have no clue. Guess we will have to wait until October, the expected release date, to find out more. What we do know is that it will be available in Black/Black, Black/Silver and Black/Orange (Just in time for Halloween). Surprisingly there is no mention of a Black/Red affair to coordinate with the vast majority of boards sold today. I leave you to check out t...

Big Release from Be Quiet! at Computex

Computex is finishing up and the hardware news is getting exciting. Be Quite!, a company renowned for their PSU and CPU Cooler quality, brought some pretty cool releases that are not only an improvement for their markets in Europe, but give consumers more items to choose from here in North America. The Straight Power 10 is a new PSU series that will finally be available in North America and the Pure Rock is a very nice looking budget CPU cooler, but the big release is a new computer case that will introduce Be Quiet! to the very competitive chassis market. Having a new PSU line up in North America is great due to the quality that Be Quiet! offers. The Straight Power series had only shown up in European markets but I’m sure the Straight Power 10 series will be welcomed warmly in North America. While the details may be sparse on the PSUs, the new CPU cooler has some very exciting connotations for the budget PC. Right now, the king of the budget CPU coolers is the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ and the close second is the Hyper 212 Evo. These have great price to performance ratios, but they leave a little to desire in the noise and aesthetics departments. Each cooler has what looks like unfinished tips sticking out of the top and while the Evo fan looks slightly better, both are slightly plain while holding the Cooler Master reputation of being pretty loud at full speed. Be Quiet! is now introducing their Pure Rock cooler that is planned to release at $35.00. If this cooler o...

The be quiet! PowerZone 1000W features stunning styling, fully modular design, and quiet operation. Priced at $189 and 80Plus Bronze certified, can the performance measure up? Let's take a closer look at the PowerZone 1000W and see if it can meet be quiet!'s claims and our expectations.

be quiet! Shadow Rock 2 CPU Cooler

Introduction The company called be quiet! might not be a name you’re familiar with, but you should be. They’re one of the top contenders in the market when it comes to power supplies and heatsinks with a “quiet” reputation. be quiet! is a German based company that has made some big noise in the European market and won quite a few awards. Today we will be reviewing the be quiet! Shadow Rock 2 CPU cooler. The Shadow Rock 2 features 4x 8mm pipes, and an optimized 120 mm fan with PWM control. It will work with all current Intel and AMD processors. This CPU cooler comes in at a little under the $50 dollar mark, putting it in a price bracket with some very good coolers. Let’s see how it compares in our testing, but first let’s read a little bit about the company!         be quiet!’s track record of offering technology enthusiasts products which focus on silence and innovation has earned them the honor of being the best selling power supplies in Germany for seven straight years according to market data from GfK.
