Hound Advice: Setting up a UEFI RAID

Hey everyone! The Hardware Hound is back with a little more “Hound” Advice. RAIDs can be very impractical for normal everyday use, but that doesn’t stop some of us from wanting one anyways. However, if you deal with very large files, then RAIDs can be a mainstay of your builds to help increase performance or add redundancy to your data. DirectX 12 is a Great Thing for AMD

And everyone for that matter! But let’s not harsh on my sacrifice of proper grammar for stylistic writing when we can focus on good things from DirectX 12. I’m a firm believer that by the end of next year, DirectX 12 and Vulcan are going to be taking the gaming world by storm. I got a chance to play around with Fable Legends and the graphics were down right amazing! Techspot recently did a comparison of DirectX 11 and 12 to show the FPS gain from a couple of different configurations in Ashes of the Singularity. While the improvements were nice overall, there were some particular gains with FX CPUs that I’ve been waiting to see for quite some time now. Let’s start with the bad news. DirectX 12 is not Bulldozer’s salvation. If anything DirectX 12 is the final nail in that coffin, in the sense that new architecture is long overdue. Shifting away from single-thread performance was never a good move. I still believe AMD was on the right track in that we needed to move to more utilization of multi-threading, especially in gaming, but that shouldn’t have been at the sacrifice of single-thread. Zen is looking to solve these issues, but these initial results are showing an 8350 struggling to keep up with an i3. Even though the i3 is later gen, we’re still talking about a low budget range CPU beating out an enthusiast one for gaming. Introduction Do you remember back in the good ole days when a new processor would release, there would only be maybe 2-3 high end motherboards you’d have to choose from? Well those days are so far gone that now there is a figurative ocean of great motherboards to wade through in order to find the right one, and that’s a great thing. Even I’ve been a tad shocked at the shear number of new releases that have come out with Skylake and the Z170 chipset. Unfortunately, life isn’t going to permit me to bring you an exhaustive list of every Z170 motherboard that’s out or coming soon, but I will give you a pretty comprehensive list of the boards that you should be looking out for. The way I worked through this is I decided to pick out the top of the line boards that I feel are doing things right. The competition is looking great and while I can’t make a decision for anyone, I can help pool some of the info I’ve been gathering to try and help you make a good choice. What’s nice is even if these top tier boards are out of your budget range, there are plenty of other options abroad that will most likely suit you. ASRock Fatal1ty B85 Killer Board Review

Far too often we pay attention to the biggest and best boards on the market and overlook the ones that actually make up a large portion of the sales. Entry to mid range components are used by the majority system builders to do a specific function and to keep costs down. Today we will be looking at a board from ASRock that falls right into the Mid-Range market but does so without skimping on features. The Fatal1ty B85 Killer is directed right at system builders that are also hardcore gamers. Smaller Technology Killing the Overclock…or is it?

Let’s face it. Smaller technology sometimes scares us overclockers! I see my behemoth tower that’s as tall as my desk from the floor, and I wonder if the day will come if that tower is much smaller. The truth is, that is a very real possibility, especially with much of this mobile and small form factor technology today. The plug to overclocking is being pulled so that the consumers are stuck with exactly what they got. But have no fear, Overclockers! G.Skill has come to our rescue by showing us that smaller tech doesn’t mean smaller tweaks. Today, G.Skill just announced that its Ripjaws SO-DIMM 2133 MHz DDR3 memory was overclocked to an astounding 2600 MHz! Even if those DIMMs where full size DDR3, that would be an impressive overclock, but this is laptop memory! If that wasn’t enough, this overclock was achieved in ASRock’s barebones system, the “M8.” We’re not talking about a wind tunnel here. We’re talking about a tiny flat box that’s barely thicker than a tablet! While I might be exaggerating the size a bit, the point is well made that even if form factors permanently get smaller, overclocking isn’t going anywhere. I don’t see my giant tower going anywhere either in all reality, but as long as manufacturers are willing to give us the option, we’ll be more than willing to find the best ways to get the most out of any hardware we get our hands on. ASRock X79 Extreme 11

The full array of Z77 motherboards has been introduced throughout the industry and Ivy Bridge is now a mainstay for Intel. With all the hype and migration, many have forgotten about another viable, and arguably better, computing platform. Yes, the X79 platform is still alive and so are Sandy Bridge "E" processors. The Sandy Bridge "E" processors have more computing power over "vanilla" Sandy Bridge and Ivy bridge due to the increased L3 cache. With that said, Ivy Bridge "E" processors are due to arrive 4th quarter 2012. The Ivy Bridge "E" series will carry the same architecture with a die shrink and more transistor density than it's little brother version of Ivy Bridge did. The transistors are Intel's new 3D Tri-Gate Transistors which operate more efficiently and Ivy Bridge "E" still uses socket 2011.
