OCZ release SPD-Z: lets users reprogram SPD chips
written by Ciro - August 9, 2007 03:10

OCZ have released the public beta of a handy little program that allows users to flash and reprogram their module's Serial Presence Detect (SPD) chips, resulting in improved performance and compatibility (if you know what you're doing).

SPD is a way to automatically access stored information about a module. OCZ noted that the GUI based program operates under Windows and does not require booting into DOS. While the advantages of such a program are obvious, an added bonus is that using SPD-Z over a third part application ensures that your memory's warranty will remain intact.

The tool is very easy to use and will actually look at the part number on the modules and point you to SPD's available on the repository here on the OCZ forum specific to the modules part number. All the end user has to do is make sure the system is 100% stable and not over clocked during the reflash of the modules, once complete the end user can reboot and commence testing.

The early beta is available for download here.
