How we protect our benchmarks from cheating

How we protect our benchmarks from cheating Have you been following the VW scandal? It’s a timely reminder to be wary of manufacturers’ claims. Our benchmarks help people see their hardware’s true performance, but you might wonder how we ensure that the scores are honest and accurate? Our commitment to providing you with benchmarks you can trust means that: Futuremark has public rules for manufacturers. In short, a platform must treat the benchmark as if it were any other application. You can only get a valid 3DMark score for a Windows PC by using WHQL drivers that Futuremark has checked and approved. Futuremark was the first benchmark developer to delist and remove mobile devices with hidden optimizations from its performance rankings. All Futuremark benchmarks are backed by detailed technical guides that explain exactly what’s being measured and how the scores are calculated. Futuremark’s Hardware Channel and Best Mobile Devices lists only show publicly available models. Futuremark never lists or leaks unverified scores from pre-release hardware. If you’ve been writing about PC hardware for more than a decade, you’ll remember the outcry when various vendors were caught making dubious driver optimizations. And more recently, some smartphone manufacturers have tried, and failed, to cheat their way to higher benchmark scores. So if there is one thing to take away, it’s that the cheaters always get caught. Not only because it ...

Getting the Most Out of Windows 10 – An Opportunity to Accelerate Gaming

We wanted to get some quick industry opinion on how Windows 10 may affect gaming experience, so we spoke with Jeremy Mortenson at Crucial. Jeremy is the worldwide memory product marketing manager at Crucial, a global brand of Micron Technology, Inc. Suffice it to say, he probably has some inside knowledge as to what it could mean, from a industry leader in the memory product market. Here’s what Jeremy had to say:   Microsoft Windows 10 went live in July and the highly-anticipated OS has been a huge hit. Not only is Windows 10 a free upgrade for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 users, feature-rich, and easy to download, it also provides users with new experiences to increase performance in how they work, play and connect, and unlocks a huge opportunity to accelerate gaming. With more than 75 million PC downloads in a month’s time, it’s been well documented that Windows 10 has been rapidly adopted. In fact, according to Microsoft, much of this adoption has been by gamers who have taken advantage of the Windows 10 streaming video game feature – in a month, gamers have collectively streamed more than 122 years’ worth of gaming on Xbox consoles to Windows 10. So, what’s new with Windows 10 and how do you get the most out of it for a better gaming experience? Windows 10 offers improved benefits specifically for gamers in a number of different ways. For instance, by combining the new features of Windows 10 with high-performance DRAM and SSDs, enthusiasts will be able...
