Introduction
Gone are the days of the cliche grey metal power supply that housed cables no longer than your forearm. Consumers have wisened to the reality of protecting their money invested into quality core components, certainly not the least of which is the modern power supply. These days they come in various models and makes, wattages and colours, with manufacturers now offering a wide selection of choices to discerning users who will fork out a good chunk of their hard-earned money. And with systems typically consuming more and more power with each subsequent generation, the once-lowly power supply now occupies a place of honour and prestige in a computer system.

Which brings us to our topic of today: the Ultra X4 1200W power supply. Ultra has a storied past in the power supply market, not all of it a shining beacon of success, but they're looking to improve on past lessons learned with the next-gen X4 series. Marketed for enthusiasts (particularly gamers), the new X4 has an entirely modular setup in a compact form, is 80PLUS Bronze Certified, and sports some nice features that look promising.

The X4 unit was announced today and hasn't even yet hit retail channels, so let's take a first look at this new power supply and see how it fares.
