Introduction
Cool and Quiet. A tall order for any computer product, to be sure. Some people look for the best performance, some want low noise levels, and some want a good balance of both. Often performance comes with a price, one of which is Noise. They are usually inversely proportional: the better the performance, the louder a fan generally is. There are exceptions: loud and hot (who wants that?) and cool and quiet. We’re hunting for the latter, and that is very difficult to find.

Noctua is renowned for their silent fans, so that's one criteria we can tick off the checklist. And from our experience we've seen them to be of excellent quality, so that's another tick in the Good column. But they also are rather expensive as a result, but as we've come to learn, top performance rarely comes cheap. Noctua has released their NF-S12B FLX case fan, a successor to the S12 that showcases a few design improvements. But is performance better as a results? Let's find out.

Thanks go to our friends at Noctua for supplying the review sample.

"Noctua arises from a cooperation between the Austrian Rascom Computer distribution Ges.m.b.H and the Taiwanese Kolink International Corporation and entertains a development partnership with the Austrian Institute of Heat Transmission and Fan Technology (Österreichisches Institut für Wärmeübertragung und Ventilatorentechnik, ÖIWV). These connections form the key to the achievement of our goal: The partnership with the ÖIWV permits the application of scientific measurement instrumentation, methods of calculation and simulation technology in the R&D process. Rascom's long, customer-oriented experience in developing and distributing sound-optimised high-end products ensures a clear focus on the users' needs. The use of Kolink's advanced manufacturing technology and ultra-modern production plants allows us to efficiently implement our technical edge and provide solutions of the highest standard in quality and performance."
