Introduction
Solid State Drives (SSDs) are flash-based storage devices that have increasingly captured the attention of computer enthusiasts over the past few years. However, with prices dropping and increased competition that will continue this downward trend, SSDs are becoming attractive options for more mainstream users who find the benefits starting to pay dividends in terms of performance and productivity.  SSDs still remain rather expensive overall, though the performance increases are a very attractive lure, particularly to enthusiasts.  However, not all SSDs are created equal; there is a wide range of performance available on the market. In fact, some SSDs are not even as fast as top traditional hard disk drives.  New controller technology on Solid State Drives are the difference, however, as the source of the good, bad, and ugly performance numbers lie predominantly in the controllers' abilities, or lack thereof. The Indilinx 'Barefoot' is one such controller making big inroads into the market, making multi-layer SSDs far better in terms of overall performance, and notably in the write-to department where SSDs have traditionally struggled.

OCZ's Vertex is one such multi-layer SSD that features the Indilinx 'Barefoot' controller, promising very fast performance numbers, particularly with Write operations. OCZ's Vertex is the latest in their product lineup, and the performance claims sound impressive.   Today we’ll pit it against some of the fastest traditional hard disk drives, and also alongside Intel's renowned X-25M SSD, and see if this OCZ Vertex can impress.
