Solid State Drives (SSDs) are flash-based storage devices that have taken the computer world by storm over the last few years. They remain very expensive overall, though prices are dropping and increased competition in the market will continue that downward trend. Nonetheless, the promise of massive performance increases is a very attractive lure, particularly to enthusiasts. However, not all SSDs are created equal; there is a wide range of performance available on the market. In fact, some SSDs are not as fast as top traditional hard disk drives such as Western Digital's Velociraptor. New SDD controllers, however, particularly the Indilinx 'Barefoot", are making multi-layer SSDs far better in terms of overall performance, and notably in the write-to department.
