I’ll admit it right off the bat: I’m a trackball guy. I play a couple of games here and there but most of my computer time is of the workstation variety (well, that and tweaking, modding, OCing etc., but that’s a given). Any control device, be it a mouse, keyboard, joystick, touchpad, or killer-multifunction-analog-controller-from-hell, is an interface between you and whatever you’re controlling on the screen. Ideally, you want as much control as you can have but at the same time you don’t want anything to get in the way: A direct connection between you and the cursor, or character, or whatever you’re controlling. An analogy is found in cars or motorcycles: When the vehicle feels like an extension of your body, you know you’re in the zone and the vehicle responds to your input without any drama and (hopefully) no extraneous nonsense getting in the way. Did I mention I was a trackball fan?
I began to wonder about this and you’ve probably seen or heard it a dozen times: “How do you review a mouse???” How indeed, especially when someone (such as I) isn’t a rabid fan for this type of controller in the first place.? With the abovementioned car analogy, I answered my own question. Does it allow me to do my job more effectively? Does it get in the way when I have Photoshop going in VMware on one monitor while juggling my MP3 player, a few chat windows, and multiple browser tabs on the other? And, of course, does it do what it purports to specialize in, namely gaming? Well, as a mere part-timer in the gaming department, I reasoned that I would find out in a big hurry whether this mouse made my life easier or harder. I think my skepticism and disassociation is actually a benefit in this case; with no preconceived notions along for the ride, you can count on the fact I’ll be suitably stringent in my examination of the NZXT Avatar.
