Introduction
With the advent of Intel's Core i7 processors, several changes have been ushered in technology and hardware components, not the least of which is a new socket. With the new Socket 1366 comes new memory, new motherboards, and obviously a new CPU architecture. Perhaps less heralded, but no less important, is the new CPU heatsink mounting holes, meaning your current Socket 775 cooler won't do the job anymore here. There are several companies now issuing Socket 1366 brackets that will allow current coolers to be used on the new i7 chips, but with a 40% larger surface area on the new chips, these behemoths output an enormous amount of heat, and we're not entirely convinced the old coolers will be sufficient.

Today we're testing the Akasa Nero, which offers Heatpipe Direct Touch (HDT) technology, a newer trend in tower-style heatsinks, and promises some efficient cooling numbers. It is Socket 1366-capable, and it is the first of several Core i7 coolers we'll be examining to test cooling performance on the new CPUs.

Our thanks go to our friends at Akasa for supplying the review sample.

Akasa

The Akasa Group of companies was founded in 1997 with offices in Taipei and London. The Akasa range includes CPU coolers including heatpipe coolers, low profile heatsinks and high efficiency coolers for the specialist market. We believe in style and substance. Akasa cooler components not only meet the advanced needs, they are typically design engineered for specific processors in partnership with major processor manufacturers early on in the design production cycle. It is our policy to support our customers in every way and provide a superb level of service based on personal communication.

Now let's take a look at the Akasa AK-967 Nero!
