The Radeon HD 4870 is not the newest card in the graphics market but it may well be the most important graphics card to be released in recent history. The reason for this is not that it is the most powerful graphics accelerator ever built (it’s not) nor that it includes completely revolutionary technology (it doesn’t). Much rather, the HD 4870 is hugely important because it hits the sweet spot of great performance and an affordable price. And it hits this sweet spot so well, that it brought ATi back into the GPU game and caused the prices of nVidia’s cards to drop like never before after its release. So even now, with a new lineup of graphics cards not too far off, the HD 4870 is still a great choice of GPU for everyone who isn’t made out of money.
Like all high-end graphics cards, the HD 4870 produces a lot of heat, though, and even ATi’s dual-slot cooling solution has difficulties eliminating all that heat and keeping the card cool. One of the best ways to achieve quiet cooling for such a card is to go for liquid cooling and one of the most prominent manufacturers for liquid cooling blocks is EK Waterblocks.
