Introduction

PC Power & Cooling are incredibly well respected by enthusiasts and widely regard as the best PSU Manufacturer on earth, and we here at Pureoverclock tend to agree with this synopsis. Build quality, performance and attention to detail seem to mean a lot to them, and it shows in every one of there power supplies. I recently reviewed the Turbo-Cool 510 SLI from PC Power & Cooling and found it to be the absolute heavy weight champion of power supplies, besting almost all other units. The Turbo-Cool 510 SLI easily powered our test rig with two 7800 GTX’s and an overclock A64 at 2.7 GHz.

This time round we are going to be taking a look at an altogether different breed of power supply – The Turbo-Cool 850 SSI. What’s so special about this unit, I hear you cry? Well, how about a continuous output of 850 watts and a peak output of 950 watts. On top of this, PC Power & Cooling seem to be listening, and have implemented a new quieter fan speed control circuit to keep the noise down, and let me tell you from the beginning, it does work. It’s now listed on PC Power & Cooling’s newly redesigned website that the Turbo-Cool 510 models have the fan control circuitry too, the difference here is that the 850 SSI has an 85% efficiency rating while the 510 SLI is around 70%. This will have an affect on fan noise so it’s likely the 850 SSI is quieter than the 510 SLI.

Here we have a unit that can power anything currently available on the market but its not even there most powerful unit. PC Power & Cooling have a 1000W model heavily based on the 850 SSI which is currently nearing release. This will be the first 1KW ATX power supply to market and just goes to show that they are a market leader, and by no means a follower.

So, who really buys an 850W power supply? There are two groups of people who will seriously consider a unit like this. The first group will be the guys out there with dual or quad CPU servers or workstations who consider stability, reliability and constant power there absolute number one priority. The other group will be hardcore overclockers who volt-mod everything in there rig and aim for world records. This group of people know how important raw power is and will pay the extra for not only 850 watts, but all the bells and whistles that come with owning a PC Power & Cooling unit.

One thing I’ll mention before we move on to the next page is that this unit is fully SSI and EPS12V compatible with both 6 pin and 8 pin connectors for servers and workstations.
