Summary

The Xigmatek Balder SD1283 continues in the HDT technology tradition, a design that we’ve seen is extremely effective for cooling efficiency when used in a tower-style setup. An interesting observation here is that we’ve also seen that the performance difference between a 3 or 4 heatpipe configuration is virtually non-existent, meaning a slimmer profile can be achieved with just 3 heatpipes without adversely affecting performance. The Balder takes advantage of that, sporting a very slim design that boasts excellent air cooling performance.

The slim design is also complemented by the gorgeous aesthetics of the Balder; the aluminum alloy finish is stunning, and the dark fan highlighted by soft white LEDs completes the picture. In a market where the next big thing either features garish and overdone "bling" or forms that are just plain weird, the Balder is a refreshing departure from the clichéd notions that ostentatious somehow equals good cooling.

The backplate installation of the Balder is a wise choice by Xigmatek, as it’s likely preferred by most people over the antiquated Intel push pin system, and the nimble fan grommets make the entire process straightforward and quick. There is plenty of space to work with here, and with the excellent build quality you needn’t worry about cutting your fingers or knuckles on the fin edges.

Lastly, in terms of value, the Balder has a price tag of about $45 USD, offering a great return on your investment, especially considering the extensive advantages you get in return. The cooling performance alone places it near the top of the performance pack, but when you consider that it’s about $20 cheaper than several of its competitors, there’s no denying the appeal with the Balder.

While the Balder cannot quite match the top coolers in terms of performance, nor some competitors for cheapest price tag, it is simply an excellent all-around air cooler. Xigmatek offers a product that has gorgeous aesthetics and an appealing combination of great performance and price that is a complete package to consumers.
