Summary

XFX has taken a strong card and made it better here, adding a custom heatsink and factory overclock out of the box. The temperatures are not the best we’ve seen on a Radeon 6950, but the fans are barely audible at idle and still wonderfully quiet under full load.

Perhaps the most important feature to note about the 6950 XXX 1GB is it’s not hampered by the halving of the memory. The available 1GB is certainly good enough for 1680 resolution, and appears to suffer no significant drops at 1920 resolution. There may be a few instances in certain game titles where the 1GB may struggle a bit with the image quality settings at maximum. But on the whole, this 1GB card actually beats the reference 2GB due to the higher core and memory clock speeds, albeit very minimally. So you get a cooler, quieter, slightly faster card that’s better looking, and all for essentially the same price.

Although the Radeon 6950 can’t quite measure up to Nvidia’s GTX 570, the XFX 6950 XXX 1GB offers some excellent value to gamers looking for a graphics card with a healthy budget. Unless you’re running very high resolutions or an Eyefinity setup, the 1GB of memory shouldn’t pose any issues. The aesthetics are fabulous, the perfomance is very good, and the value here is impressive.
