Today we had the opportunity to be one of the first sites to review and test the new VisionTek Racer Series 480GB SSD. It’s a brand new series from VisionTek and the first ever SSD from a company we have known for years for the fast ATI/AMD video cards they manufacture.
It’s important to remember that most consumers looking for a 480GB SSD probably aren’t looking for the fastest benchmarks possible. Such a person is looking for a very fast data transfers with a very large capacity, and that’s exactly what we have here with the Racer 480GB. The Toshiba Toggle NAND certainly helps chew through most applications, so there’s a bit of extra in the tank as a result of these better components.
The SSD market is getting very competitive these days, as pricing becomes more accessible to the masses and there’s greater demand for these superfast drives. So, in terms of pricing, most SandForce SF-2281 drives are seeing price drops of late, but the high capacity 480GB drives aren’t cheap. This one has Toggle NAND as well, so prices aren’t for those without hefty wallets. We found the VisionTek Racer 480GB at Buy.com for about $710. Prices in the memory industry are always volatile, but that is more expensive than some other competitors, though 480GB SSDs with Toggle NAND are rare. So it’s a question of what that high capacity and fast speeds are worth; we expect it to be more of a niche product, so a premium is expected.
The VisionTek Racer 480GB is a very well balanced SSD with a good combination of high speed and capacity. It is suitable for those who want a great all around product.
