Introduction

We’ve seen a good range of performance and price in AMD’s 7000 series lineup, from the flagship 7950 and 7970, to the budget-oriented 7750 and 7770. Sitting comfortably in between are the 7850 and 7870, the topic of today’s focus.

Until Nvidia’s mid-range Kepler cards hit the market, it looks as though AMD is racking up the marketshare in this consumer segment, as cards in this $250 – $350 price range generally hit a sweet spot for gamers; frankly, it can be a lucrative market.

VisionTek is an AMD partner that typically produces reference designs, but these new cards have been tweaked, looking to produce better temperatures in a sleekly-styled package. Performance is one thing, but we’re suckers for great value as well, so let’s take a closer look at these graphics cards and find out if they can meet our expectations.

Excellent review, much appreciated. I took a chance and bought the 7850 before I read this and was pleasantly surprised. I plan to buy a second in the near future. With asus GPU tweak its core speed will actually reach 1050 MHZ btw
