Ultra X4 Gold 1000W
The Ultra X4 1000W is a very sleek power supply that delivers solid features and good performance when heavily loaded with a case full of power-hungry components. The accessories included in this package are great, and there is a very good assortment of sleeved modular cables that support SLI/CrossFire setups, and an easy-to-use modular connection design is employed. While Ultra can claim that the X4 is fully modular, we’re a bit puzzled as to why it’s been done in the first place since a handful of those modular cables always need to be connected anyways, and should have been considered for hard-wiring to begin with. This could be useful, however, if Ultra offered a "short cable" package in the event some consumers wanted to build a monster rig in a smallform case that doesn’t have room for extra cable slack. That being said, the cable lengths are quite long, and will allow for good cable management and organization in a full-tower case setup.
From a functional standpoint, the X4 1000W has very good voltage regulation, an 80 PLUS Gold efficiency rating, and a quiet operation. However, the low noise levels come with a tradeoff in that the exhaust temperatures are higher as a result. Coupled with the small heatsinks, the unit gets rather warm, and we think this could be easily solved by adjusting the fan speeds for higher RPMs when operating a high loads. The only other niggle is the slightly "overvolted" +12V which is within spec but higher than we typically see from other manufacturer models.
At the time of this review, the X4 1000W retails for about $269 USD. That’s not the most or least costly for power supplies in this kilowatt range, so it’s neither a standout nor problematic in that respect. There is some stiff competition for modular kilowatt power supplies that are 80PLUS Gold certified nowadays, but it’s encouraging to see so many manufacturers working to improve the effiiciency and quality of the units being offered to consumers.
While the Ultra X4 1000W isn’t a standout in any one category, it isn’t a slouch either, and is a very good all-round power supply that offers an attractive combination of features, functionality, and aesthetics, and can provide the power needed for the most demanding systems out there.
