Bigger is sometimes better, and ironically, smaller can be as well. As we’ve seen today, it’s possible to have the best of both worlds: higher storage capacity in a small form factor for a flash drive. Portability and durability are two essential qualities for a flash drive, but speed is where products are made or broken in this market. Fortunately the USB 3.0 interface is becoming commonplace, as the speed boost potential is enormous in comparison over USB 2.0.
From a features standpoint, both of these flash drives are sleek and well styled. They’re very small and slim, with a strong cap design, and should easily hold up to most manners of abuse.
In terms of performance, the Transcend JetFlash 700 is respectable, offering good Read speeds around 85MB/s, while the Write speeds are just a bit lacking in our opinion. That said, this model is best for mainstream consumers who don’t need top speeds in a flash drive. Priced at $37, the JetFlash 700 is, however, a great value for those who want a compact and quick flash drive that won’t break the bank.
The JetFlash 780, on the other hand, is an absolute performance beast. Pushing Read speeds just shy of 200MB/s and Write speeds of about 140MB/s is nearly unseen in the marketplace; there are very few drives that can claim performance numbers close to this. In fact, the 780’s numbers are the second fastest results we’ve seen to date in our extensive testing. We found the JetFlash 780 64GB model for about $65 online, and at that price it’s nearly a steal for what you get, particularly against the competition’s similar prices but slower speeds.
We came away impressed with both of these flash drives, in terms of features, performance, and price. The JetFlash 700 is a great value option, while the JetFlash 780 is a speed demon. Regardless of which you consider, Transcend has put together a great package and strong value for consumers who want a flash drive that’s fast, durable, and affordable.
