Since the advent of the Intel LGA1366 socket, the memory controller for Intel chips has been directly connected to the processor, allowing a huge bandwidth leap in triple-channel setups. The LGA1156 socket chips, both Core i7 and i5, run in dual-channel DDR3 mode though, not tri-channel. While we know this won’t result in such eye-watering performance numbers, we do realize as a result that the 1156 platform has brought "affordability" to Intel’s mainstream performance platform, at least at the lower end of the product spectrum, and certainly in comparison to the 1366 platform.
So while the LGA1366 motherboards take tri-channel memory modules in a 3 or 6-slot configuration, the LGA1156 socket makes the move (back?) to 2 and 4-slot dual channel configurations. Most people are probably very familiar with this setup, though the primary difference now is that DDR3 is the new de facto standard, not DDR2. Onward must we push, feeding the bottomless technology beast as it were.
There is a caution, however, with the 1156-capable DDR3 modules: you absolutely MUST have DDR3 sticks that can run at 1.65V or less. Do not be confused with other DDR3 products that run at 1.9V or higher, for example. Be sure to read the specs very carefully before you order to ensure you get the right ones! This is because Intel has set a maximum voltage limit of 1.65 volts on the memory modules, due to the Integrated Memory Controller which is located on-die in the CPU itself. While there are exceptions in exceeding the 1.65 voltage limit, if you go higher then you run the risk of damaging your lovely i7 or i5 CPU. Pushing beyond that limit can be done somewhat safely under special circumstances, but we do not recommend that for novices, so be forewarned.
