Prologue: Introduction

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, don’t they? I’ve often wondered who "they" were though. The cynic in me would say they were probably the jealous ones who were stuck with something ugly and wanted to make excuses. But the idealist in me would say they were probably the ones who may have had something beautiful and were trying to help along the ones who weren’t as fortunate. The funny thing about beauty being in the eye of the beholder is that we can find it anywhere; in nature, in architecture, in cars, in computers. Computers? Why not?

If you are one to appreciate the difference between a computer case and a computer CASE……..or if you’re a dreamer that likes to just look at pretty and shiny things, then today we have something just for you: a Smooth Creations computer system. For those of you who may not have heard of Smooth Creations, you have probably seen photos of their work around the Web, particularly in coverage of the various tradeshows and conventions. Founded in 1999 by an automotive finishing expert, Smooth Creations is a company that specializes in custom artwork on computer systems. And when I say artwork, I mean ARTWORK, not the type of bland paint jobs you may see floating around. Their staff are experts at their craft and airbrushes are their weapon of choice. They detail cases just like a hotrod car: all paints used are automotive basecoats/clearcoats that are applied in controlled-atmosphere booths, then sanding, cleaning, basecoating in multiple layers, airbrushing custom designs, and finally clearcoating several times.

I have had the pleasure of reviewing a Smooth Creations…..creation……before; it was a full Zalman tower, custom-painted and a hotrod gaming rig. This time around I’ll still be examining a hotrod gaming rig, but the LanShark is a custom plexiglass, micro-tower creation. Michelangelo or Mickey Mouse? You be the judge.

Our thanks go to Smooth Creations and for providing the LanShark for this review.

Smooth Creations

Smooth Creations was founded by Jim "Smooth" Saling in 1999. Smooth has over 15 years of experience in the automotive finishing industry. During that time, Smooth’s work has gained national attention from many media outlets. He has been called on to design and create custom paint jobs for high-end sports cars. When he was introduced to the high-end computer industry by a friend, it was the perfect match. Now the power users of the computing world can get a custom designed, hand-painted "Smooth Creation" to match their interests, hobbies and even mood.

Let’s get started.
