Summary

Since audio is such an intimate personal experience, and highly subject to individual preferences, it’s not an easy market to tackle. However, Sharkoon as done a good job with the X-Tatic SP on the whole. The ability to connect to a console or PC can be very advantageous to gamers who own both platforms, and this will certainly save some money by having to get two different headsets; convenience is always a good thing in the digital world.

The design and aesthetics are solid, the comfort is hampered a bit by the stiff padding in the earcups, and build quality is very good. In terms of audio quality, the trebles and ambient sounds are excellent, clear and crisp. But any percussion pales in comparison. Movies, often known for punching the bass into a lovely deep rumble, leave a slight hollowness in any special effects scenes.

While the upside of the USB connection is that it’s entirely plug and play, the downside is there isn’t any sort of advanced audio effects or adjustments available, so you’re essentially stuck with what you’re given. And while what is offered certainly isn’t bad, the flexibility to suit individual preferences is a very important consideration when it comes to audio because it’s such a personal experience.

In terms of gaming, the 3D positioning is fine but the immersiveness is disappointing simply due to lack of strong and distinct bass. The microphone boom is just slightly short and the snake-like design is a bit too loose, but the transmission quality is great and works beautifully with both Teamspeak and Skype.

The Sharkoon X-Tatic SP is a good product in many respects including aesthetics, ease of use, and portability. For the price, there really isn’t cause for complain; this is not an elite set of cans, so it doesn’t carry the high price tag either. The convenience of USB and versatility of connections between console and PC platforms is the hallmark of this headset. So if you’re looking for an affordable gaming headset, the Sharkoon X-Tatic SP isn’t without a few drawbacks, but it does offer some attractive positives that certainly merit consideration.
