Introduction

My mom always told me to watch out for the little, quiet ones. I usually try to follow Mom’s advice, but when it came to women, it didn’t happen, and I ended up marrying a little, quiet one. And Mom wasn’t disappointed. Go figure.

What’s wrong with flashy, outgoing ones anyway? Well, without going into specifics, sometimes they carry a big price tag. Now before you go emailing me to complain, let’s draw a parallel here for just a minute to prove my point: graphic cards. Sure, we love horsepower, sexy and curvaceous coolers, and high performance, but they cost a small fortune. So do most guys lower the bar and settle for something more in our price range? While you ponder that, let’s continue the segue and move to today’s real discussion.

While we may dream of dual Radeon 5870’s in Crossfire, most guys don’t have the cash to drop on that, so we work within our budget and go for the sure thing. Similarly, AMD made a push to reach the 40nm GPU milestone, beating Nvidia to the punch, but more importantly they temporarily gave up the endless pursuit of absolute top performance and decided to go for top value. It was a smart move, and it’s paid off handsomely, both in their bottom line, and in consumers’ wallets.

Sapphire’s Radeon HD5750 is indeed a budget card, but offers some exciting potential for gamers who can’t afford to go down the high-priced road. No shame in that, and we’re bang-for-the-buck fanboys as much as the next person. The 5700 series cards bring some very attractive features to the table, so let’s take a closer look and see how this one shapes up. It is also a little, quiet one, and after seeing what it can do, you may just have a new love as well. If she knew anything about computers, Mom would be proud.

Thanks go to our friends at Sapphire for providing the Radeon 5750 for this review.
