Sapphire 6970 FleX Battlefield 3 Edition
AMD Eyefinity allows users to essentially span three separate monitors into one large, singular desktop. The lure of this to gamers is a massive field of vision across three screens. But Eyefinity has always had one very big asterisk: one monitor must have a native DisplayPort connection, or else purchase an active adapter that runs a DisplayPort connection. But this is where the Sapphire 6970 FleX Battlefield 3 Edition changes the rules.
What’s so special about these FleX graphics cards? Well, they support Eyefinity out of the box with no need for expensive DisplayPort or adapters. That capability is built directly into the card itself, independent of the monitors being used. This means that any monitors with DVI ports can now run Eyefinity; no expensive DisplayPort is necessary. Of course, you still need three monitors to begin with, but the cost and technological implications are significant.
We’ve seen a few other FleX models, most recently the 6950 version. But that card didn’t have the horsepower to push respectable framerates at extreme resolutions across three displays. But this 6970 makes a bigger jump, with a more powerful GPU and 2GB of GDDR5 memory, looking to remedy that problem and bring better gaming experiences to the diehard enthusiasts.
Let’s dive in and take a closer look at the Sapphire 6970 FleX and see if it has the power to tackle Eyefinity gaming.
