Introduction

Nvidia’s high performance GTX 580 graphics card has been a very impressive product, offering killer gaming performance to enthusiasts who crave speed and power. However, as we know, reference designs will only push things so far; temperatures and noise levels on the high side are typically the weak points in the stock designs. But custom card designs are just the thing to solve those issues, bringing considerably more to the market at what is often very modest increases in pricing.

Two common ways of improving a graphics card are to offer a factory overclock and a custom heatsink to improve temperatures. PNY is doing both here with their latest GTX 580 models, but they’ve gone an extra mile (or two) to do better. Apparently not content with air cooling, PNY now has liquid cooled cards. But these aren’t regular cards with only a water block on them; they’re fully self-contained liquid cooling systems that are plug-and-play, with no extra water gear required.

Truth be told, PNY has two models available: a GPU-only version, and a GPU + CPU system. We can hear the guffaws already from water cooling enthusiasts; cooling a CPU and GPU with a 120mm radiator is a joke. And we’d normally be one of the first to agree with you. But after getting these cards on the bench, we’ll admit we were forced to eat our own objections.

Don’t believe it? Read on as we examine the PNY GTX 580 XLR8 Liquid Cooled graphics cards in greater detail. You may be shocked at how cool these run and how simple they are to operate. Oh, but what about the cost? How’s an extra $40 over the regular card sound? If that’s a helluva deal, we don’t know what is.
