Summary

As we stated at the outset, we do realize we were comparing apples to oranges, with different rated speeds being put to the test in today’s examination. However, in side-by-side comparisons at identical speeds and timings, the Patriot Viper II Sector 5 modules generally performed better than the capable OCZ modules. Further, the Patriot sticks could produce better top speed, allowing better overall performance increases, particularly CPU overclocks when the memory was the limiting factor.

These Patriot Viper II Sector 5 modules also offer good bit of headroom when going beyond their 2000MHz rated speeds. The tolerances and returns are smaller the higher you go in the speed department, but these modules have sufficient gas left in the tank to reach some impressive numbers on your system. Running 2106 MHz is nothing to scoff at, particularly when they can allow the CPU to hit just shy of the magical 4.0GHz mark. These sticks proved to be very easy to overclock, and not touchy to voltage tweaks at all, which is always a blessing when trying to find the limits of your memory and overclock settings.

These 4GB Viper II Sector 5 modules can be found for about $170 USD, which is in the mid-upper price range in its market segment, though you do get a $20 value with an included 3DMark Vantage serial key/registration. Patriot modules have typically been offered at some of the more competitive prices you’ll find, so it’s slightly surprising that these Sector 5’s don’t come in around the $150 mark. Nonetheless, you do get some excellent modules that can really push some impressive numbers as a result. Considering these sticks are suited for the diehard enthusiast, you really can’t complain about what you get for the price.

Patriot has done an excellent job with these modules, showcasing gorgeous aesthetics, quality construction, and excellent performance. If you’re looking to push your new Core i5/i7 system and want some impressive modules that run fast and stable, then these Patriot Viper II Sector 5 DDR3-2000 modules are a top pick.
