Ever have a blind date that didn’t quite live up to your hopes? How about a great used car that turned out to be a lemon? I’m sure most of us can relate on some level to the lesson learned that what we were promised doesn’t always live up to the hype. Well, we’ve seen many Solid State Drives here, and some have managed to live up to the hype, and some have not.

Recently the SandForce-based SSDs have been making waves with their killer performance numbers, and today we’re looking at a horse of a different colour, so to speak. The OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD certainly does come in a unique colour, but under the hood it packs the same horsepower in the form of the SandForce SF-1200 controller, a little juggernaut that has made quite a positive impression on us.

We’re specifically looking at the 120GB version of the Mercury Extreme Pro, and other than the cool colour, it also comes with an extended warranty that’s best in class and an attractive price tag for this capacity. Other World Computing, or OWC, might not be a well-known name among PC enthusiasts, and perhaps part of the clue for that might be in their website URL: www.macsales.com. But don’t let the Mac moniker fool you; they deal in PC components, and the Mercury Extreme Pro is no slouch, which should appeal to us PC diehards that love our killer gaming rigs that spank Macs back into yesteryear (yes, that was a slight flame to our Mac friends in the crowd. We do respect you guy, truly).

Let’s put this SSD on the rack and see what it can do.
