Introduction

We’ve seen SandForce-based solid state drives become very popular over the last couple of years, prices have continued to drop and consumers are taking notice of the impressive overall system boost that SSDs can offer. Today we will be taking a close look at the cost effective drive offering from OWC, the Mercury Electra 6G 240GB SATA 3 drive. The Primary reason for the lower cost is OWC’s choice of asynchronous (Async) NAND flash memory. This drive is similar to the OCZ Agility, Corsair Series 3 and Patriot Pyro with regard to the type of NAND (Asynchronous) that is used. OWC uses Asynchronous Tier 1/Grade A 2X-nm NAND Flash Storage.

The OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD is available in 60, 120, 240 and 480GB capacities. Specifications list the 240GB as having 556MB/s read and 523MB/s write with 60,000 IOPS at 4k random write aligned disk access. The OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD is TRIM compatible as well as backward compatible to SATA 2. The Drive comes with a 3 year warranty. OWC is so confident that you will love the drive they offer a 21 day return period in which you can return the drive for a FULL refund with NO restocking fee. Hey, you don’t see that every day. We know of no other manufacturer offering this kind of satisfaction guarantee.
