Summary

As we’ve said countless times, the single biggest bottleneck in modern systems is the traditional plattered hard drive. If you want a performance boost then using an SSD in your system will make such a massive difference that you’ll wonder why you were stuck in the dark ages with a traditional hard hard drive for so long. Make no mistake, the speed boost is that pronounced and alluring.

The new SandForce controller is indeed a force to be reckoned with, producing some outstanding performance results, as we saw it obliterate every other controller out there so far. The only drive that manages to eclipse the Vertex 3 MAX IOPS is the Revo X2 which has SandForce controllers in a RAID setup.

Of course, blazing speed doesn’t come cheap. Costing about $550 USD for the 240GB version, the Vertex 3 MAX IOPS comes in at $2.29/GB, but that’s reasonable considering the speed being offered here when viewed against the competition.

The OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS puts up some outstanding results across the board, leaving the competition behind, but what’s more significant is that this drive is actually reasonably priced on a per-GB basis when compared to other SSDs on the market. If you don’t have the cash for the 240GB version, then the 120GB is far more affordable and accessible to consumers. You really can’t go wrong with either one, as the OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS is a fantastic solid state drive.

The Pure Point: Blistering speed is a hallmark of the new SandForce controller, and the OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS is a speed demon.
