Summary

As we’ve said before and we’ll continue to hammer any chance we can get, the single biggest bottleneck in modern systems is the traditional plattered hard drive, and using an SSD in your system will make such a massive difference that you’ll want to cry if faced with having to use a traditional hard drive afterwards. Make no mistake, the speed boost is that pronounced and alluring.

It seems things bode well for the new SandForce controller, and OCZ has proven to be a leader in the solid state drive market. The OCZ Vertex 3 is a force to be reckoned with; the performance is simply jaw-dropping. We saw some outstanding results across the board, leaving the competition behind. And in some cases we saw the Vertex 3 even beat the Revo drive, which is a RAID solution and doesn’t support TRIM, while this drive does. It seems the Vertex 3 is almost able to max out the SATA 3 bandwidth, which should be more than enough for even the most diehard enthusiasts out there. Running 550MB/s Read and 525MB/s Write is nothing to scoff at.

Perhaps what is just as impressive is the Vertex 3 is very reasonably priced on a per-GB basis when compared to other current top SSDs on the market. And while the drive isn’t cheap, the value is actually quite impressive when the price-to-performance is considered. Costing about $500 USD for the 240GB version (and $250 for the 120GB version), the Vertex 3 isn’t cheap but it’s a considerably better deal than the Crucial C300 256GB drive when we look at the huge performance advantage of this OCZ drive. Until now, the C300 has been the fastest non-RAID SSD on the market, but the Vertex 3 utterly blows it out of the water. This new SandForce controller essentially raises the bar and leaves every other SSD behind.

The bottom line here is that the OCZ has a real winner with the Vertex 3, continuing their success in the SSD market by providing top performance at a very respectable price for consumers who want the best.
