As we’ve seen several times before, the SandForce 2281 controller is a tour de force. For any consumer contemplating an SSD purchase, choosing a SandForce-based drive such as this Vertex 3.20 is a safe bet, and we certainly wouldn’t argue the decision. There are quite a few on the market, and this one from OCZ is another successful one. There is a distinction here, though, is Vertex 3.20 isn’t targeted as a premium drive, and we saw why in the test results.
Performance for the Vertex 3.20 is generally very quick, particularly with Sequential results, as the SandForce controller chews up the data on those tests for the most part. When we get to incompressible data, the Vertex 3.20 struggles, like all SandForce drives, and its weakness is exposed. This is a rather narrow issue though, as the 4K results we saw in Crystal Disk Mark were excellent. PCMark Vantage also illustrated the great suitability as an OS drive as well.
In terms of value, most SandForce SF-2281 drives are seeing price drops overall, and this OCZ Vertex 3.20 120GB currently retails at $120, which is competitive in the market. It’s not left wanting in any regard, and the price is certainly attractive. For mainstream consumers who want a fast and reliable value SSD, the OCZ Vertex 3.20 is a solid option.
