Introduction

Speed is such a fascinating thing. I can tell you from experience that driving a car at 240 km/h (or 150 mph for our non-Commonwealth friends) is both an exhilarating and frightful experience. Being on the edge, while also realizing you could be scraped off the pavement if something goes wrong, is a very intoxicating and sobering thought all at the same time. But for many, speed can also extol such a high cost, in more ways than one, that it’s not worth the pursuit.

Of course, the lure of speed in the computer world can be just as enticing, though it’s far less likely you’ll get pancaked into a concrete wall while running some overclocking benchmarks, eh? Well, Solid State Drives are the new exotics of the computer world, boosting performance in leaps and bounds. But as we know, those increases often come with a hefty price tag. So just how much are you willing to pay for the speed? Ah, now that is indeed the question.

Over the last year or so we’ve looked at many Solid State Drives that feature various technologies in the attempt to boost speed and performance. Some have been successful, some have not. The popular Indilinx-based SSDs have proven very adept and shown impressive results, though there have been some growing pains along the way. But there’s a new kid on the block that goes by the name of SandForce. Boasting even better performance numbers than all competitors, SandForce appears to be positioned to drag the SSD market forward, and one of the companies at the forefront is OCZ Technology.

OCZ has an extensive SSD lineup that’s impressed us in the past, and today we’re looking at the SandForce-based OCZ Vertex 2, in what appears to be a promising successor to the popular Vertex. But how fast is it? Oh, it’s fast alright. Looks like there’s a new king on the dragstrip.

Thanks go to OCZ Technology for supplying the review sample.
