As we’ve said before and we’ll continue to hammer any chance we can get, the single biggest bottleneck in modern systems is the traditional plattered hard drive, and using an SSD in your system will make such a massive difference that you’ll want to cry if faced with having to use a traditional hard drive afterwards. Make no mistake, the speed boost is that pronounced and alluring. But what’s so unique about the RevoDrive Hybrid is that a traditional plattered drive is used here, albeit in conjunction with an SSD in the superfast PCI-Express interface. And the results and nothing short of amazing.

While the raw sequential results are outstanding, the incompressible data is also very good. What is perhaps most important, however, is the 4K results. Plattered hard drives typically suffer from poorer speeds in comparison to SSDs, but the RevoDrive Hybrid is designed as an OS drive, and it performs admirably in that sense, killing most of the benchmarks as we saw. There’s really no comparison with a traditional hard drive here, as the Hybrid knocks it out of the park.

Retailing for about $500, the RevoDrive Hybrid isn’t cheap. However, most regular SSDs are considerably smaller in capacity, while hard drives of this size are positively slow by comparison. The Hybrid gives you the best of both worlds; you get massive storage capacity with unbelievable speed. And when that’s taken into account, $500 is a practically a steal in our opinion.

The Pure Point: The OCZ RevoDrive Hybrid is unlike any other drive on the market, with blistering speed and massive storage capacity.
