Summary

As we’ve said countless times, the single biggest bottleneck in modern systems is the traditional plattered hard drive. If you want a performance boost then using an SSD in your system will make such a massive difference that you’ll wonder why you were stuck in the dark ages with a traditional hard hard drive for so long. Make no mistake, the speed boost is that pronounced and alluring.

The new SandForce SF-2281 controller produces some outstanding performance results, as we saw it obliterate every other controller out there so far. The Agility 3 can’t quite measure up to its bigger siblings the Vertex 3 or the Revo X2, the latter of which has SandForce controllers in a RAID setup. Of course, we did see a couple instances where the sequential speeds tanked with incompressible data, but that shouldn’t have any significant effect in normal daily use. The reality is that the Agility 3 is still extremely quick, and the random small file results were particularly encouraging.

Of course, such speed doesn’t come cheap. Costing about $460 USD for the 240GB version, the Agility 3 comes in under the $2 per GB at $1.92/GB, which is actually competitve against other SSDs that feature the SF-2281 controller.

It seems OCZ is riding the wave at the forefront of the pack in the solid state drive market. The OCZ Agility 3 puts up some excellent results and is well priced for what you get.
