MSI GTX 580 Lightning Twin Frozr III
The GTX 580 Lightning Twin Frozr III successfully continues MSI’s tradition of bringing graphics cards that feature high performance and low temperatures to consumers that demand top quality products. This card is a behemoth in just about every aspect: it’s long and heavy, and frankly, this thing is built like a tank.
In terms of features, voltage tweaking ability is an important selling point to many enthusiasts when deciding which manufacturer’s card to choose. Perhaps more important, however, are the impressively low temperatures and noise levels which are a massive improvement over the reference design. MSI has produced a winner with the Twin Frozr III heatsink, as we saw a jaw-dropping 27°C improvement in load temperature from the reference design. Further, the GTX 580 Lightning crushed every card we tossed against it, and overclocking headroom was also impressive.
With the GTX 580 Lightning priced around $525 USD, we think this is reasonable considering the voltage tweaking ability, improved power design, extremely impressive temperatures and low noise levels. When saddled against the MSI 6970 Lightning, we saw the Radeon card was the victor in terms of gaming value for your buck, but the GTX 580 Lightning reigned supreme as the top overall performer. You can’t go wrong with either one, as both designs are impressive.
The Pure Point: The MSI GTX 580 Lightning Twin Frozr III is an outstanding graphics card, offering an improved power design, top gaming horsepower, and extraordinary low temperatures.
