Summary

Bigger is sometimes better, and ironically, smaller can be as well. As we’ve seen today, it’s possible to have the best of both worlds: higher storage capacity in a small form factor that’s still very fast. Portability and durability are two essential qualities for a flash drive, but speed is where products are made or broken in this market. Fortunately the USB 3.0 interface boosts the speed potential by leaps and bound over USB 2.0.

In terms of performance, this second generation Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate improves upon its USB 3.0 predecessor and is blisteringly faster than any USB 2.0 drive out there. After using USB 3.0, you simply won’t want to go back to the USB 2.0 Dark Ages, the difference is that pronounced.

There is a caveat here, of course: you need a motherboard that offers USB 3.0 support. Almost all new motherboards on the market offer this, but if you’re using an older platform and motherboard then you’re out of luck unless you get a PCI Express-to-USB 3.0 expansion card. Or else you accept the backwards compatibility and live with the glacial pace of USB 2.0, in which case you should get the cheapest little flash drive you can find and don’t waste your money on this speed demon.

The Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate G2 USB 3.0 32GB packs a huge amount of storage onto a device that’s the size of your car key. It’s lightweight, highly portable, and durable. Retailing for about $85, it’s more expensive than other 32GB USB 3.0 drives on the market, but this Kingston G2 also offers higher speeds as well. Be sure to look carefully at the specs, not all USB 3.0 drives are equal in terms of speed. In fact, we’ve seen only one other flash drive with similar speeds and price; all others are considerably slower than this Kingston drive. Apples to apples, this Kingston G2 drive is the one of the fastest out there.

So is the extra speed worth the price jump over USB 2.0? Absolutely. Once you drink the USB 3.0 Kool-Aid you won’t go back to the USB 2.0 brine.

The Pure Point: If you want top speed and storage capacity, the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate USB 3.0 G2 32GB is one of the best.
