Summary

The HEC 98 Series Super Tower is a full-sized chassis that doesn’t seem to be marketed to gamers or PC enthusiasts in particular.  Rather, it seems that HEC is targeting people who appreciate a straightforward case that’s well designed and built solidly.  The aesthetics are rather conservative without being utterly boring, and the interior features a classic layout that offers a large volume with which to work and house some beefy components. Ironically, the HEC 98 is utterly silent in operation since there aren’t any included fans. We all know you need case fans so the choice is yours as to how you want to balance airflow with noise levels.

The lack of spring loaded pegs on the door is something HEC should definitely work on. It would make installation and removal of the front door much more easy. I’d also like to see the screw-less expansion slot mechanism replaced with something more reliable, but the ability to simply use screws is still there so I’d recommend that approach. The retention mechanism might have been more happily received had the instructions clearly explained how to use it.

With those gripes out of the way, I must add that the build quality of the case is simply spectacular. The finish is great, and it doesn’t feel as though a single part in the case has been made of a cheap material. The HEC 98 series is simply an astonishingly clean and high quality case, to put it as simply as possible. It has a few shortcomings, but they are not dealbreakers of any sorts.

Priced around $170 USD, the HEC 98 is in a tough market segment, one step below top premium cases but in a crowded “mid-market” class that has some very good cases by various manufacturers. Now, if the HEC 98 were about $20 cheaper it would command some serious attention, but as it stands, it’s just a “good” price. The HEC 98 may not stand out as an absolute top contender in any one category but what it does accomplish, it does very well.  It’s a solid case in terms of aesthetics, features, quality, and price and should satisfy most people looking for a full tower that can get the job done really well.  It’s a great case, and you really can’t go wrong if you were to choose it, so we do recommend the HEC 98 Series.
