Summary

We’ve seen enough memory modules to know that performance differences are minor when running rated speeds, and to a modest degree, tighter timings. Greater differences typically haven’t been seen until we pushed them on the bench with some heavy overclocking. But the Sandy Bridge P67 platform has really changed the rules of the game, and unless a set of memory modules can be run at one whole speed level higher than their rated specification, overclocking is essentially null and void. As a result, it appears the best course of action is to get a kit at the highest speed and lowest latency that fits within your budget and not worry about overclocking headroom.

In terms of aesthetics, these Ripjaws-X modules are sleek, and would fabulous in just about any motherboard that has a blue or black colour scheme. From a functional perspective, the heatspreaders are on the shorter side and should avoid any clearance issues with even the largest CPU coolers on the market. The Turbulence II fan is a big improvement from its predecessor but it could potentially interfere with large CPU coolers, though in that instance it would happen with any memory fan and not just this one.

In terms of performance, the Ripjaws-X modules ran extremely well, posting the best results we’ve seen of several Sandy Bridge modules we’ve tested. The real measured performance resulted in increases over 4% in some instances, which are again the best results we’ve seen.

Pricing is always a bit volatile in the memory market, but we managed to find the Ripjaws-X and Turbulence II fan combo for about $145 USD, which is a rather good deal for modules in this speed and latency, and is competitive against other manufacturers’ combo kits.

G.Skill has done an excellent job with these Ripjaws-X modules, showcasing sharp aesthetics, quality construction, excellent performance, and very good value. If you’re looking to extract the most of a hotrod Sandy Bridge system, these Ripjaws-X modules should be at the top of your wishlist.
