Introduction

When AMD launched the 7000 series graphics cards not long ago with the release of the 7970, they made changes were designed to move forward, with a new architecture and new expectations. Nvidia’s GTX 580 flagship card couldn’t stand up to the new powerhouse from AMD, as the 7970 was significantly faster, firmly sitting atop the mountain as king of the single GPU cards. And as expected, successive models one rung down on the performance ladder are now launching. And so we have the Radeon 7950.

Specifically, we’re looking at the Gigabyte HD 7950 today, it’s a ramped-up version of the AMD design, coming with a customized air cooler called the Windforce. As we’ve seen in the past from Gigabyte, excellent cooling is characteristic of this Windforce design, so we hope that trend continues with this new card.

We know the 7970 is a perfomance monster, but what about this 7950? Is it strong enough to fend off the GTX 580? Framerates tell some of the story, but what about temperatures? Power consumption? Gaming value? Let’s take a closer look at the Gigabyte 7950 and answer those questions for you.

YES! I am purchasing this card for my i5 3570k rig next month and the price should drop to around 300 USD, and with the new catalyst drivers out, it only makes it comparable to the gtx 670 at stock! Overall the best gpu I will buy in my life for the money. Hats off to gigabyte on this one, they deserve a cheer for team red and homemade ice cream from the losers at team green.

Hello, I’d like to know if the length of the Gigabyte 7950 written on their website (285mm) is from the back plate or its just the length of the PCB..
