GELID Tranquillo CPU Cooler
Often lost in the overclocking oriented world of high end coolers are cooler that aren’t. We can spend too much time focusing on the absolute best cooler available, unwittingly neglecting to recognize the strides that have been made with entry level and mid ranged coolers. Interestingly, many heatsinks are capable of cooling around the same thermal load, with many temperatures being only a couple degrees apart. A few degrees may initially sound like chump change, but at the higher end of the temperature spectrum, a few degrees can be the difference between a stable OC and a BSOD.
Not only heatsinks have a broad range in the cooling market, we must also consider heat paste. It comes in many shapes and sizes, some in 22g tubes, others in small bags that can’t be resealed, some can be frozen (not a good thing if you’re doing some extreme OC-ing), and others not. So, what is thermal paste? For those not in the know, the IHS (Integrated Heat Speader – the nickel coated top of the processor that’s got the model, batch, date codes and the like) isn’t perfectly smooth – and neither in the base of the heatsink. When they’re combined, they do have microscopic gaps that need to be filled – and for that, we use thermal paste.
Today, we’ve got the GELID Tranquillo heatsink/fan setup, and a tube of GC-Extreme for review. Let’s check them out.
