I’m not sure why multi-GPU configurations are frowned upon so much in the development world. Sure, the majority of consumers may not like the headaches right now, but I still believe mGPU is the future of gaming. PureOC posted an article a while back pointing out that Far Cry 5 had recommended CrossFireX or SLI for 4k game play. Personally, I had never seen that before from a game developer, not to say it hasn’t happened though. Seeing a company as notable as Ubisoft making the recommendation made it all the more exciting.
Now the question comes: How well do mGPU configurations scale in Far Cry 5? Seeing the recommendation in the system specs would imply that a technology like CrossfireX would do great. However, if the implementation comes with performance gains less than 50%, then maybe mGPU really is a waste of time. I don’t want to believe this, but I must know the truth! I wish there was a way for me to test multiple system configurations, including SLI, but for today we’ll only be looking at CrossFireX (Radeon mGPU) scaling with dual R9 290X GPUs.
