AMD Fusion

For those who are not familiar with Fusion, it is technology that brings graphics processing directly to the die of the processor. AMD has named what was called the CPU an APU(Accelerated Processing Unit).

Others have tried to bring a graphics processor to the central processing unit but none have tried with a truly programmable GPU. This vision drove AMD to purchase ATI and to pursue this concept that has become a reality. In the past, platforms used multiple chip technology between the memory controller, CPU and GPU. The architecture of the APU now combines x86 cores and the GPU into a single hardware fabric. The result is a more efficient processing unit and consumes less power. Keep in mind, AMD is working from the bottom-up with this technology so we are not expecting earth shattering performance with the new release. AMD’s code name is called Brazos.

"The AMD Fusion APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) gives software developers the power to unleash their imaginations and access new revenue opportunities by creating futuristic, visually rich applications with no-compromise performance even on the small form factor devices users want."

Let’s take a look at the new little guy on the block.
