Introduction

As time passes, as we get more familiar with the world of computer hardware, we begin to pick up on trends. We begin to learn what works, what doesn’t work, and what to expect and what not to expect from different manufacturers. Parts get reputations, like nVidia’s G80, which required constant heatgunning after a while to force to work, and some power supplies being reputed for leaving you out more money than you had planned and nothing to show for it.

ECS has historically had a name for producing budget motherboards. They didn’t cost much, they didn’t look particularly striking, and quality was hit and miss. So sometimes you got a great board, sometimes not. However, something happened last year that made big news and signalled a shift in the mindset and direction for ECS: they released the P55H-AK, a premium motherboard that was, well, rather impressive.

ECS’ P55H-AK stunned the hardware world – a high end motherboard from a known provider of lower end parts. Featuring gorgeous new aesthetics and lots of enthusiast-friendly features, it was unexpected. Indeed, ECS has started from the ground up and brought something completely designed to their lineup. Was it a one-off, or a sign of things to come? It turns out it wasn’t a one hit wonder, and now ECS is aiming to continue that trend.

Looking to expand that mindset into the AMD lineup, ECS is releasing the A890GXM-A2. It mimics that same styling and new features’ approach with the 890GX chipset. Does this ECS board have what it takes? Let’s find out.

ECS, the Elitegroup Computer Systems, has been a pioneer in designing and manufacturing computer motherboards since 1987. With its 21 years of experience in designing and manufacturing motherboards, the building block of many of today’s personal computers, ECS is expected to remain as one of the major contributors in the IT industry. The company is very fortunate to work very closely with many major chip designers in the PC industry on the design, development and manufacture of future IT innovations. Together with its business partners and its team members around the world, ECS is ready to provide a rich variety of new products and great services to its customers in the years to come.
