Introduction

For years the debate of whether a single component makes a computer system range from average to great has been going on. Is it the CPU, GPU, Motherboard, memory; is there a single piece of hardware that can be crowned the king of the hill? In my opinion the answer is no. It takes a culmination of components tuned in to one harmonic unit that will put one system over top of all others.

With that being said, imagine you have your system built, listening to your MP3’s, playing games and owning everything and everyone in sight. Sounds great doesn’t it? That’s the thing, sounding great is literal and figurative. A dedicated sound card is probably the most overlooked component on the market. Why? Is it because we already have adequate integrated sound? On-board sound cards are produced economically for the simple reason of the price; they are designed more often than not just to sooth the savage beast of the all mighty dollar. However, there is one caveat here and that is that they are of lower quality and typically don’t truly reproduce the quality sound that was originally produced.

To fully take advantage of the original sounds being produced whether it is a MP3, movie or game you should really consider a dedicated audio card. There are several to suit just about every price range, and coming in varying costs and qualities. Today we’re focusing on the more affordable side of the audio cards, as we look at an entry level card from Diamond Multimedia: the XS71DDL Xtreme Sound, featuring 7.1 / 24 bit audio.

For users on a very tight budget or perhaps looking for an audio upgrade with an older PC, this Diamond card might be up your alley. Let’s take a closer look.
