Summary

Faced with the prospect of having to be like everyone else, The Bling Guy would surely be giddy over these Ballistix Tracer modules. Set with a finish that borders on iridescent and available in blue, red, or green, the blinking LEDs are about as brash and flashy as memory modules get. Quite simply, you will not find another product on the market that will mezmerize your LAN party-goers such as these.

With the aesthetics well in hand, what about performance? These Crucial Ballistix Tracer modules today offered some impressive results, matching or beating the other top performers, clock for clock, and leaving us suitably impressed here. Frankly, most great overclocking modules use Micron chips anyways, so it’s not surprising that their own company, Crucial, would have a product that can showcase the very best.

These Crucial Ballistix Tracer modules offer some impressive headroom beyond their 1600MHz rated speeds, especially considering they’re starting at CL8 instead of CL7 like other modules we’ve seen. The tolerances and returns are smaller the higher you go in the speed department, but these modules have sufficient gas left in the tank to push about 16% higher than their rating, topping out at 1866 MHz. Overclocking is very easy, and the Micron chips respond well to voltage increases, though the timings did have to be loosened to CL9 to get the extra bandwidth.

With X.M.P. enabled here and posting excellent numbers across the speed spectrum, these Tracer modules are classified as "performance" models, and they certainly accomplish that. But the uniqueness of the Tracers lie in their aesthetic; you don’t buy these sticks just for the performance, you buy them because you also want that look of something very special. Performance comes at a price, but the prestige factor is what really separates the pennies from the pounds so to speak, and the Ballistix Tracers do have a price tag to match their stunning looks as well. Coming in around $320 USD, your wallet will be considerably lighter for that exclusivity. This price will be too high for most people, but that again, that’s the point here; if you’re looking to buy a set of Tracers, then you probably don’t care much about the price. Similar to the old story about the Ferrari, if you have to ask about the price tag here, then you probably can’t afford it.

Crucial has done a superb job with these 6GB Ballistix Tracer modules, showcasing otherworldly aesthetics, quality construction, and great performance, but it does all come at a very steep price. If you’re looking for something that will set you apart from the crowd at your next LAN Party and don’t mind paying for the bragging rights, these Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR3-1600 modules are it.
