Today’s high-end graphics cards continue getting packed with more power. And is often the case, the more power, the hot more heat is produced, and the louder the cooling fan as well. Gamers and enthusiasts have been looking at aftermarket cooling solutions to lower temperatures and noise, and one option to accomplish that is liquid cooling.

Consequently, leaping from air cooling to water cooling is not an easy task, especially for a graphics card. The reason for this is typically it requires an investment into a specific full coverage water block for a card that cannot be used later for new cards. You’re essentially trapped with no upgrade possibilities, and that can be an expensive proposition. There is the possibility of a universal block, but those only cool that chip alone and not the other card components, so it’s really a half-hearted approach. Both options have pros and cons, and such is the way it’s been for water cooling enthusiasts, well, since forever.

There may be change on the horizon, however, as a new product from CoolIT Systems looks to offer something more flexilble in terms of options and affordability. The CoolIT Omni A.L.C (Advanced Liquid Cooler) is the first fully upgradeable, factory-sealed liquid cooler for high-end graphics cards. The Omni promises to lower GPU temperatures and noise levels, while also potentially allowing higher overclocks.

CoolIT’s approach to GPU cooling with the Omni is rather unique, so we’re going to look at it in greater detail and then test it on the mini furnace known as the GeForce GTX 480, but also on a Radeon 5870 as well. Let’s find out how the Omni performs with a couple hotrod gaming cards.

For years, CoolIT Systems has been working with leaders in the computer industry to research, design, and provide an affordable new cooling product that provides a comprehensive solution for end users while exceeding high OEM standards. This carefully designed and patented technology unleashes the full potential of a PC, providing superior cooling performance while reducing system level noise and improving reliability of vital components. This small, but potent, pre-assembled product can be easily installed inside any standard chassis.
